County has 4,500 illegal immigrants in jail, most of any in N.Va. [16% of inmates]

Fairfax County has about 4,500 illegal immigrants in its jail, the most of any Northern Virginia locality, according to state crime commission findings released Tuesday.

Illegal aliens account for about 16 percent of Fairfax’s inmates. The crime commission, which advises the General Assembly on legal issues, estimated 8 to 10 percent of all jail inmates statewide are illegal aliens.

“I had no idea it was that high,” said Del. David Albo, R-Springfield, of Fairfax’s incarcerated illegal immigrant population. “It costs the county taxpayers a lot of money — about $10,000 per inmate each year — to keep people locked up that shouldn’t even be in this country.”

Albo, co-chairman of the commission, is preparing legislation for January’s General Assembly session that would require localities to begin deportation proceedings against incarcerated illegal immigrants after the prisoners have served their sentences. Albo added that even if the state enacts that law, Virginia would need cooperation from federal officials to get the offenders out of the country.

Prince William County, where local officials have made national headlines for their efforts to crack down on illegal immigrants, has a slightly higher percentage of illegal aliens incarcerated (17 percent, or 2,409 people) than Fairfax does. Loudoun’s inmate population of 636 illegals (4.6 percent of all inmates) is much smaller than its neighbors.

According to commission research, most illegal immigrants are incarcerated after being convicted of drunken driving and other alcohol-related offenses or for charges of possessing forged government documents.

Since they are here ILLEGALLY,(and they have no rights) make them work for their stay. Fix the roads, clean up the litter, etc, etc, etc.

Or better yet, just DEPORT THEM!

Fly them back first class to their respective capital cities (am guessing most would return to Mexico). Deduct the cost from any foreign aid those countries receive. The illegal immigration would be halted on the other side of the border.

Baloney sandwiches, tents and a bath once a week. Are pay the Russians five thousand a head per year to keep them in jail.

Build a wall on BOTH borders and deport ALL illegals including the incarcerated.
Why should we pay to incarcerate other countries’ criminals.
It’s not like we are long on jail cells and short of criminals.
By deporting the incarcerated illegals AFTER we build a wall on BOTH borders, we not only cut down on prison & jail costs across America but we open up slots for AMERICAN child molesters and other sordid criminals who are roaming about the country unabated.
Our children & grandchildren will appreciate it immensely!

“...begin deportation proceedings against incarcerated illegal immigrants after the prisoners have served their sentences...”

Umm...no. You BEGIN the proceedings as soon as it is determined that they are illegal. Right now, there is a controversy over whether it is proper for the police to determine whether criminals they arrest are here illegally. I naively thought that was already done.

“...even if the state enacts that law, Virginia would need cooperation from federal officials to get the offenders out of the country...”

Don’t hold your breath. What SHOULD happen is if a criminal is found to be an illegal alien, the convict is promptly turned over to the federal authorities where he/she is kept in a FEDERAL jail built especially for criminal aliens. If the federal government fails us by allowing illegals here to commit crimes, they should entirely foot the bill.

Then we can talk about serving the sentence while awaiting deportation. Those who are here illegally should be thus incentivized to behave themselves, knowing that if they are caught, they will not only do jail time, they will also be deported.

I’m afraid Northern Virginia is one place where the economy really would collapse if all the illegals were deported. Arlandria and Route 1 south would be ghost towns, all the McDonald’s would close for lack of help, and all the painting and landscaping companies would be out of business. The rental housing market would collapse too. This is why none of the local politicians there want to do anything.

This is what the business would like us to think, but there are plenty of Americans willing to do this kind of work. Without the illegals depressing the wages, employers would have to pay Americans enough to do these jobs.

Right now, they are offering the same wages as I remember from 20+ years ago. And the cost of living has gone up considerably since then.

Wow, that is high.

Sheriff Arpaio’s jail in Maricopa County, AZ, the sixth largest and fastest growing county in the country, only has 2,000 of the approximate 10,000 inmates identified as illegal alien inmates.

Outsource the illegals to Chinese prisons. I’m sure the Chinese could put them (or at least parts of them)to good use.

Fairfax County has about 4,500 illegal immigrants in its jail . . . Prince William County, where local officials have made national headlines for their efforts to crack down on illegal immigrants, has a slightly higher percentage of illegal aliens incarcerated (17 percent, or 2,409 people) than Fairfax does.

The difference is that all of the inmates in Prince William County will be processed for deportation (under the Section 287(g) Program) while the majority of those in Fairfax County will be released back into the community.

I ask you Virginia, which would you prefer?

Deport them all to to Guatemala so they can get a feel for a real compassionate immigration policy when they try to cross back into Mexico.
