Thompson's refusal to back a nationwide ban on gay marriage has irritated potential supporters.
Fred Thompson is failing to meet expectations that he would rally widespread support from Christian conservatives, and he almost certainly will not receive a joint endorsement from the loose coalition of "pro-family" organizations, according to leaders of the movement.
Many religious conservatives, faced with a Republican primary top tier that lacked a true kindred spirit, initially looked to Thompson as a savior. But the former Tennessee senator has disappointed or just not sufficiently impressed the faith community since his formal campaign launch earlier this month.
While Christian conservatives once seemed willing to readily give Thompson the benefit of the doubt earlier this summer, when questions were raised about his lobbying for a pro-abortion-rights group, they are not willing to turn the other cheek anymore.
Even some on the religious right who remain sympathetic to Thompson are unhappy about his refusal to back a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, and were unpleasantly surprised by his confession that he doesnt belong to or attend any church and wont talk about his faith.
It was Thompsons refusal to discuss his faith that is likely to deny him any unified backing from the organizations that comprise the Arlington Group, the umbrella coalition of almost every major social conservative group in the GOP constellation.

The inclusion of the word “EVERYONE” (changes their minds) is what caught my eye. Everyone? Really? Says who? Says what?
Just more typical run-of-the-mill manufactured BS...
How many liberals want to prevent queers from marrying?

#####Im part of the religious right. But weve got to recognize that were a minority. If you insist that your candidate adopt all of the positions of a minority group, he will lose. Pick one or two, and give them some slack on the others.#####
I agree with you. The President doesn’t have any real say-so on constitutional amendments in the first place. So I wouldn’t refuse to support Thompson over this issue.
However, if we don’t enact the FMA, the result ultimately will be a massive transfer of power to the federal government.
You’re right. I just did a site:politico.com Jonathan Martin search and that writer is clearly has it out for Thompson, going several months back, even (maybe longer, not sure).
fanatism, zealotry
intolerance - unwillingness to recognize and respect differences in opinions or beliefs
Only in your mind!
He's just another carnival sideshow preacher with a political agenda. Just wait a few years...we'll probably be hearing a televised confession of how he's lusted after some tennie-bopper or how the toe-tappiong incident in the men's room of some rest stop on I-25 was a lapse in moral character.
It really is a yes or no question. Are you or are you not saying that Christians in the United States are on par with the beheading jihadis?
That’s pretty unfair to Dr. Dobson. I don’t agree with him on Fred Thompson but he’s been a good fighter for conservative causes.
Mitt Romney and Duncan Hunter are nothing alike. Why would you say that?
100% legally WRONG.
I have been to the bar conferences where the lawyers and judges have calculated they can essentially eradicate the common law definition of marriage via rulings.
You don’t know what you are talking about because an amendment is codifying the common law definition of marriage as One man and One woman. This, under statutory interpritation principles gives it the broadest protection.
It is not a narrow construction issue.
Marriage is ALREADY a federal issue via taxation, inheritance and immigration.
The fact Fred Thompson is getting firmer about dissing the marriage issue only speaks to his other stances.
this is a dealbreaker litmus test.
Fred Thompson better speak for himself instead of these surrogages. Either he is for a marriage amendment or he should just stop wasting our time and go home.

Thompson’s refusal to back a nationwide ban on gay marriage...
Let’s go for a RINO or an unelectable fringe player, ‘cause they’ll be much more like to win and provide conservative leadership!
Next thing, you’ll find out he opposes a police state to put women who had abortions into gas chambers for MURDER!!!
Don’t forget the McCain vanity fair article where he explicitly said “he would let homosexuals marry each other”
#####Marriage is ALREADY a federal issue via taxation, inheritance and immigration.#####
And it’s already been declared a matter under federal jurisdiction in the Loving vs. Virginia 14th Amendment case. Combine Loving with Romer and Lawrence and we have the makings of a massive federal power grab on our hands.
But Mitt is so DREAMY!
Which is why female Freepers seem to love him do much.
I guess the “kneepad factor” has invaded the GOP, unless it did in 2000.
Hey!! Watch it with the female cracks. :p
I think Willard is creepy.
Actually, I do know what I'm talking about. The /failure/ of a marriage amendment will mean that interpretation is on the table. Identify the 2/3rds of the legislatures that would vote for a marriage amendment. Not the states where the people have supported one man with one woman, but the state legislatures which will be voting on it.
At this time, you don't have the numbers to pass it. So, I'm sorry, but this dog don't hunt. It's a losing issue as an amendment. It /has/ to be dealt with on a voter amendment basis, not only to curtail the reach of the federal government, but also because at the ballot box, the voters will speak their minds, whereas their legislatures won't.
