Hope fades for passage of bill to aid young illegal immigrants [DREAM Act]
Houston Chronicle ^ | September 26, 2007 | Michelle Mittelstadt

WASHINGTON — The hope for immediate Senate action on the DREAM Act, which would grant legal status to hundreds of thousands of young illegal immigrants, faded Tuesday as the measure's chief Senate sponsor acknowledged he was having difficulty surmounting Republican opposition.

Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., has been seeking to attach the DREAM Act to the defense authorization bill pending in the Senate. But in an interview Tuesday, he said the DREAM Act isn't among the items on the table as Republican and Democratic leaders discuss ways to quickly wrap up debate on the defense bill.

"We haven't given up completely, but the options on this bill are limited,'' Durbin said.

"I'm disappointed for thousands of young people whose lives are just in limbo," he added. "They want to move on with their lives and do good things, and unfortunately we haven't been able to pass the laws to make that happen."

Immigrant-rights advocates were dismayed by the setback but vowed to find other means to pass the legislation, which they have sought since 2001.

"There is no question that this issue doesn't stop here," said Cecilia Muñoz, senior vice president of the National Council of La Raza. "The longer we wait, the more talented young people we close the door of opportunity to."

The DREAM Act would allow illegal immigrants who entered the U.S. before the age of 16, and have lived here at least five years, to receive conditional legal status if they have graduated from high school and have a clean record. After six years, they could become permanent legal residents if they serve in the U.S. military for at least two years or complete at least two years of college. As with most green card holders, they could apply for citizenship after five years.

Durbin, you clown, why don't you lead a revolution in Mexico if you are so concerned with the welfare of non-citizens. The people elected you to preserve our Republic, not destroy it, you clymer.

Bush wants to increase the debt by a trillion bucks. Concurrently needs to come up with chattel to secure it. Anyone else think there is a major connection between the debt and open borders?

I fear that Durbin, Kennedy, and their ilk will try to somehow sneak something past us again. Again, it was the people calling and the likes of Laura Ingrahma who helped defeat it.

NumbersUSA had a lot to do with it too. If you don’t subscribe to their e-mail alerts system you should. Amnesty will be back.

Thanks for the info.

Unfortunately you are right. Considering the frenzy among the Senators and other politicians to get special perks and even amnesty for illegal aliens, they will try to sneak it past us again.

Somebody posted that many of the prom-amnety senators might be under a lot of pressure from their foreign handlers.

Who can doubt that when clearly the Chicoms have bought our Presidency before and are trying to do it again? There doesn’t seem to be much concern, much less outrage, that foreign interests are buying our politicians.

Outrageous how many of our politicians are willing to sell out this country. Many people disbelieve that the war in Iraq is to make American safer since we refuse to protect our border and fail to deport illegal aliens. We are even admitting more and more people from enemy nations. There is talk of attacking Iran, yet - according to one report - we admit increasing number of Iranians into this country. Now there are signs of Muslimization of this country.

What you say is true and it is truly bizarre. Common sense seems to be nearly dead anymore. I don’t see the failure to secure our borders as proof that the war in Iraq is not about national security. I see it as an indication that there are huge blind spots (and alternative agendas) in Washington. Representing the will of the people and defending the Constitution have become very low on the priorities scale.

It was going to cost us the country, like all the other amnesty bills from Bush and his no-border Democrat comrades.

“The RNC seems to have trouble recognizing winning issues to bury the democrats, “

The RNC is more interested in pleasing its global minded contributers than it is in defeating Democrats or representing American voters.

“Now there are signs of Muslimization of this country.”

A big mosque has just gone up in Orange County, CA.

Nothing to worry about, the White House assures us it’s a religion of peace. Keep that border wide open.

Sure is scary. Yet many of our senators stood up to support illegal aliens no matter what their crimes and a bill to deal with them was defeated.

Democrat Durbin calculatedly places the blame for the failure of Amnesty Two squarely on Republicans (and some Repubs deserve blame).

However, Durbin and the rest of the Democrat hyphenate sluts will not dwell on the fact that opposition to shamnesty cuts across party lines.

Anti-amnesty is a rare consensus issue that cuts across party lines and idealogy.

The Founding Fathers were very, very clear.

The federal government should be the weakest part of our government. The local government should be the strongest because the closer you get to the people, the more it is in connection with the people and its will.

All the best Horror Classics have lots and lots of sequels.

“Shamnestyville Horror VI: Durbin’s Dream, Nancy’s Nightmare”
2 stars. Not a lot of action. Things looked really scary when the Dems were about to slip the NIGHTMARE Act in the middle of the night in the military bill, but just in the nick of time, someone found the Republican backbone, in Bob Dole’s old desk. the day is saved, but ominously at the end, the shamnesty monster, bloodied, battered but still alive, shakes its fist and says: “There is no question that this issue doesn’t stop here.”
