I’ve been saying since we went into Afghanistan that this was Pres. Bush’s grand strategy all along. Take Afghanistan. Take Iraq, isolating Syria and Iran. Let Iran fall from within (with a little covert pressure), and leave Syria swinging in the wind.

Who’s left that can offer any real threat?

A third is it was a hit on the stockpile of Saddam's chemical/bio weapons snuck out of Iraq and into Syria for safekeeping before the US invasion of April 2003.

Note: this topic is from September 26, 2007. Blast from the Past. Aw, more of a reminder of somethin' behind yer.

Notice how far away Dayr az-Zawr is from Israel. An F15/16 attack there is not a tiptoe across the border, but a deep, deep penetration of Syrian airspace. And guess what happened with the Russian super-hyper-sophisticated cutting edge antiaircraft missile batteries when that penetration took place on September 6th. Nothing.

Most of the distance to Iran...
