MILLER BREWING KNOWS THE STAKES: MUST PULL SPONSORSHIP OF OBSCENE EVENT(Catholic League)
Catholic League ^ | September 25, 2007 | staff

Posted on 09/26/2007 7:49:01 AM PDT by kellynla

On September 30, San Francisco’s Folsom Street Fair will be held. The ad for this year’s gay/leather event depicts half-naked homosexuals at a table mimicking the Last Supper. The sadomasochistic theme features sex toys displayed on the table.

Catholic League president Bill Donohue explains his response today:

“Kudos to Concerned Women for America for bringing this obscenity to the attention of the public. Their strategy is to get California politicians to denounce this event. Our strategy is to get Miller Brewing Company to withdraw its sponsorship. Here’s why.

“There are several sponsors to this street fair, but most are local and represent niche markets; Miller is the only national household sponsor. Furthermore, Miller has a record of acceding to requests from various segments of the population that have objected to certain ads: it has bowed to the wishes of Muslims, African-American clergy, lawyers and feminists by pulling ads deemed offensive. Surely it will do the same in this instance: the ad, like the event, is morally depraved. Indeed, it is the kind of ad that only the enemies of Christians would entertain.

“We have contacted Miller Brewing and expect that they will cooperate and do what is ethically right.”

Miller's been sponsoring this sort of stuff for years. Back in the 90s, I did some volunteer work with a Miller Rep, right after the news broke that Miller was a major sponsor of the "Gay Games". He took an awful lot of crap over it.

I don't drink Miller products. Mostly because I think that they taste awful, but also because I don't like the events that they choose to sponsor. And, their latest commercial blitz has been really, really dumb IMHO, too.

I think the only brewing company whose marketing choices are consistently worse than Miller’s is Anheuser-Busch (owners of Busch Gardens). Those are perennially the two worst.

the city itself is listed as a supporting sponsor....
SF Environment...a department of the city and county of San Francisco...

you can let the city or county or mayor know your feelings here:

All Miller has done is ask to have their logo removed. They are still putting up a lot of the money for the Sodom and Gomorrah reenactment.

Yes, I live in the FL Panhandle, and its a common beer to find down here. Come on down...but don’t move here, unless you’re ready to pay outrageous property taxes.

I logged on to the Miller Brewing Company website and sent in a question. The response back was that they objected to the poster and had requested that their logo be removed from the poster. I told them that it did not address my question, so I got a email form to fill out. I told them that the only acceptable act would be to pull their sponsorship of the "festival" for this year and future years. To do otherwise would be disengenuous.

I think this is something Roman Catholics and Lutherans can agree on.

There won’t be any “looking back” in San Francisco because none of them will want to turn away in the first place.

“It’s not a boycott if you refuse to drink it because it tastes like cra”

I was thinking of asking them why they have so many horses lined up outside their ‘brewery’.

Oh, crap. They brew Leinenkugel? That was my refuge whenever I was in a bar that didn’t serve any decent beers.

Good point. And good for you in following up. You've set a good example for us.

Drink Sam Adams.

Yea, that little "Sex for Sam" incident that led to sex in a Catholic Cathedral was pretty "tasteful".
