Lincoln’s vulnerability in 1864 is a lesson of the danger of political shortsightedness in opposition to staying the course. If Sherman had not been so proficient in his Georgia campaigns there was even a danger that the Democrat McClellan might even had been elected in 1864.

Had not Davis replaced Johnston with the reckless Hood, Sherman wouldn’t have taken Atlanta, at least not before the election.
