Joan Finch suspected her husband was having an episode of post-traumatic stress and was worried that he could harm family members or himself. Since he had access to a gun, she obtained a protective order from Morro Bay police Sunday. Morro Bay police confirmed that they issued a protective order.

thanks for posting
Huh??? Is there a babblefish translator that rewrites gun related headlines from the lib media? As near as I can tell and the way the headline reads, there was a second firearm that was fired by the authorities. I know that's not correct, but that's the way it reads.
It is pretty sloppy. I knew from reading the story what it meant, but still, it was lousy wording.
Presumably if he'd only had access to a knife or brass knuckles, she would not have sought or obtained a protective order?
And he'd presumably not be in hospital full of holes.
Investigators said the rifle was loaded with .223-caliber ammunition, and that an additional magazine and a box of .223-caliber ammunition also was in the Chevrolet Silverado.
Police say Finch fired at least two shots at officers with a handgun, which was recovered at the scene.
Seems to me if a guy was having flashbacks, and had a loaded 5.56 rifle (most likely AR-15, but could have been Mini-14 or AK clone in 5.56) rifle, and wanted to shoot someone, police or not, he'd have used the rifle.
I give thanks for the officers, that they were not injured. I also pray for a family that is in a crisis. I realize that Finch must take the blame, but the family is devastated. Where there was once a business and a family, there is now horror and grief.
Of course it can, but there must some evidence or indication of a threat, not just the ability to carry one out.
It serves as supporting information though.
That buys into the notion that guns cause crime. It's the person, not the guns that is the threat. A nut job with no guns can get some or use some other instrumentality. A sane law abiding citizen is not a threat even if he owns a fully armed M-1A2 Tank.
Yes
"That buys into the notion that guns cause crime."
It is not my view that the gun causes the crime. All I am pointing out is that supporting information for the EPO included information regarding a firearm. Had it been a knife, or a screwdriver, or a baseball bat, or even no weapon at all, the EPO would still have been issued.
