Please see following posts for URL links to the discussion threads for
Part 1 and Part 2 of the seriees.

All commentary regarding personal experience, family tales of WWII,
and critique of how Burns (and PBS) handles topics are welcome.

Hopefully the threads on the seven episodes will serve as
guides when this large documentary becomes required viewing in
high schools.
Comments on how Burns handled the documenatry (positive,
negative, or neutral) will come in handy when "the younger
generation" sees the series. Especially if Burns takes a
"Smithsonian" tact to some topics...leaving people to wonder
"who the good guys were" during the epic struggle.

and to check for airing times of “The War” on local PBS stations...

URL to check listing for local PBS stations:
http://www.pbs.org/thewar/broadcast_schedule.htm

DO BE FOREWARNED:
One poster on the West Coast last night said that when they tuned into
their PBS station...SEAN PENN was on the air!

So, maybe put your welder glasses on and turn down the volume in
case your local station is putting somebody like Sean Penn on...”for balance”.

You have been warned!

On at leasst some PBS stations, each part of “The War” has been rebroadcast,
i.e., here in Mid-Missouri, Part 1 aired at 7PM Central, then was rebroadcast
at 9PM.

This might help late-arrivers or folks with VCRs.

Burns may be a bit PC at times, but imo thusfar the documentary has been both well done and fair. ....and he leaves no doubt whatsoever about who the good guys were. The footage from Guadalcanal was tremendous. Tonight I suspect we'll see some footage of P-51 Mustangs taking on the Luftwaffe while escorting B-17s in their daytime bomb over Germany.

According to my local TV listings (Texas—Central Time), the program begins at 8 pm not 7 pm.

Too much attention paid to the status of Japanese and Black Americans During the war. Yes of course, it was horrendous and shameful in retrospect; but somehow it seems out of place and jarring in this Documentary.

The treatment of minorities during WWII may have been best left to a Doc dedicated that to that subject alone. Maybe not—I don’t know.

Overall, the more I watch, the more I think it doesn’t quite congeal. He’s trying to do too much — oscillating between war theaters and the conditions at home.

Is it just me, or does the female voice narrating the photos seem weird? Do you think it could be a “mistake”. Last night’s program had no such narration.

The first two nights were good, but tonight we are being punished with liberal guilt. I understand we had internment camps and segregation....report it and move on. Tonight has been 20% history and 80% lib hand wringing.
