Hey!
Today we get almost 4000 deaths in five years.
Those poor bastards got 5000 deaths in the first few days!
??What is it that today’s folks don’t understand about war??
I am holding my breath about Part 4.
After this evening, I won’t be shocked if Burns doesn’t spend time
asking why Ike didn’t institute an affirmative-action plan so that
more “soldiers of color” could have been KIA on D-Day.
All I know is that having John Hope Franklin was a turnoff, at least
for me.
I’ve seen him in a couple of documentaries.
And each times he’s always on the tangent of how he was mistreated
(and he was).
What I dislike is he’s basically made a great career out of non-stop griping.
I’m glad I never had him as a Professor.

How incredibly lucky and spoiled they are.
Occassionally when I and male relatives my age get to
b-tchin’ about
the cost of gas, the New York Times, etc.,
one of us will say “BUT, we never had to go to war like WWII or
Vietnam thanks to our age”.
I think most of today’s “brats” don’t get that sort of attitude.
This entire documentary reminds me of Bradley's "Fly Boys" where one has to sift through the hate America crap to find good history. I guess one is not permitted to produce anything about American history these days without reminding us about all of the social evils of the times...kind of like throwing the baby out with the bathwater if you ask me.

But Pelosi, Reid, Murtha, and many others of their age group should understand what war and US superiority are really all about.
??Why do they want this beautiful country to fail??
Is it hatred for Bush, hatred for the US, or a disgusting grab for misguided power??

Some might have also been used in a PBS documentary “The Perilous Fight”.
It’s been a couple of years since I saw it...and I may be confused,
but I think it even has some color footage of a nice picnic with a
bunch of happy All-American families...but it’s a meeting of something
like The American Bund (chilling thought).
One caveat: narration by Martin Sheen...but he does a good low-key job

I saw some of Bradley’s presentation of that book on BookTV (C-Span2; weekends).
About five minutes into the discussion he dug such a deep well of
political correctness...I switched channels.
What a disappointment.
He blamed the behavior of the Japanese on us and the west. He then provided a summary of our past wars and highlighted all of the unethical things some of our troops did and painted them as the norm. He should be hung.

I agree....they got Inoye in there.....they could have countered it with Bob Dole. I distinctly remember hearing an interview with Burns on CSpan where he said this was done with ONLY regular guys.....Inoye seems to be the exception.
Left out the Jimmy Dolittle raid on Japan in early 42. Unforgivable for a WWII Documetary. Guess he had to make room for the PC stuff.

....he has disciples in the field too....in college my daughter signed up for a course in WWII history....it was taught by an angry black woman.....the course turned into “the black experiance in WWII”...when it came time for course evaluation students felt duped and wrote that it should be listed under African-American Studies...that comment fell on deaf ears.

....exactly, or with any one of thousands of average GIs who fought with great courage and sacrifice....the backbone of the US Army has always been the white working class.

Glad to see I’m not the only one who felt the need to turn the channel last night. The “white guilt” syndrome began to bore me. 80% liberal hand wringing indeed. Think I’ll skip the rest of the social engineering series. My dads father was a Marine at Iwo, mothers father was with Monty’s 8th Army (2nd Chesire Regiment). I have a pretty good picture from them what went on at home and abroad. Doesn’t jive with what I’ve seen so far. They thought Britain and America were worth dying for and apologizing to no one over it.

I do not recognize his face.
He has been around!
But his voice I have heard before.
I’m sorry your dad died so young. My dad died at 75, but his life was hell. His sisters said he was never the same when he came back from the war. The jungle combat and the brutality of the Japanese soldiers left images he could not deal with. He drowned his nightmares with alcohol. He had severe emotional problems. I understand him better now. I wish I had known what he went through when he was still alive. I honored him by attending his battalion reunion - I only found out about it after he died - and there was only 8 guys there, but they shared stories with us. It was amazing. I wish I’d paid attention before.
When I watched the tape of Episode #2 the other night, the voice was familiar to me, too, but only on the tip of my tongue. I checked the credits and when I saw his name, {Senior Moment slap to the forehead} I knew who he was!
