ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- A jury found Allan Barahona, 20, guilty of running down and killing an Orange County sheriff's deputy.
Barahona told a jury that his car was defective, causing him to strike Deputy Michael Callin last year as the officer tried to pull him over.
Callin had parked his motorcycle on the Kirkman Road onramp to Interstate 4 and was working speeding detail when he was hit and killed.
Monday, Barahona was found guilty of manslaughter, vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of an accident, resisting arrest with violence and driving with a suspended license.
Callin's mother, Anna, said she was upset that the jury did not go with a second-degree murder charge.
"We don't feel like it is justice," Anna Callin said. "We had hoped for the second-degree charge."
Callin's widow said she was thankful Barahona will be held accountable for his actions.
"We think he was held accountable for his actions," Callin's widow, Vicki, said. "We will all be held accountable for what we do on this earth."
Barahona has been arrested six times in the past but has never been convicted.
He faces up to 60 years behind bars for the crime.
A sentencing hearing is scheduled for Nov. 16.

He’ll do heavy time. In many states, he would be “getting off”. In FL, they put you away. The only time you get out is when a judge orders prisons reduced for overcrowding.
I had an acquaintance that was fooling around with three teenage boys. The boys were trying to shake him down for money (admitted by the prosecution) and hung out with him for beer and cigarettes. They were no angels. He got 135 years. Contrast that with sentences around the country for similar charges.
No it isn't right that your slime bag son is still alive and the police officer is dead.
Follow-up on the 2006 Deputy hit and run story
Seems like a deliberate attempt to me. I wonder why they didn’t give him the death penalty. I’d say he deserves it.
In other local news, Fairbanks had only two barracaded gunmen incidents this year. In yesterday’s traffic incident, it is not yet known if the motorist that got filled with lead had a firearm.
I thought the prosecution had witnesses (including one in the car) that testified he swerved to hit the deputy.
Thanks very much for the update. 60 years isn’t enough, but it’ll have to do.
Why is this thread under the keywords “aliens” and “immigration?”

And from your post 15 he was probably in the country illegally. He will probably be out on the street again in 10 years.
Pinging TN - LEO loses life to illegal.
This guy should have been behind bars long ago.
There is quite a long stretch of onramp where it follows I4. So it’s very easy to get up to the same speed as the traffic. You have about 10 seconds of uninterrupted straight way- It’s easy to think you don’t have to pay attention to merging traffic for a while...
About 2 weeks before this happened I saw an officer jump out in front of a car that had passed me doing about 70 mph.
My thought then was that one of these days, someone will be fiddling with their radio/cd/soda/food as they get ready for a drive, and not see the officer. Especially if they are getting something from the passenger side of the vehicle and using peripheral vision to keep an eye on the road...
The turn from Universal Studios to the straight way is fairly sharp. Enough so where I’ve had my cell phone slide off to the floor from the seat next to me. and my cell phone rang. It was a lesson that learned and made a few changes...
I wasn’t speeding... The other guy got pulled over!! But 2 weeks later, I said “But for the grace of God, there go I!”
It’s a horrible tragedy, don’t get me wrong. I told to someone else about it fairly quickly.
We BOTH agreed that it was a bad area to be pulling folks over for speeding )doing 65 in a 45) That it was a speed trap....
We were convinced that the department would make some training changes or at least put an AUTOMATED speed radar gun that tells you your speed. But NO! 1 WEEK later there are officers with motorcycles hiding behind the pillars pulling people over just the same way!
I think he may have been leaning over, saw the officer, panicked, hit the gas instead of breaks...
He doesn’t step into the lane of traffic next to the speeder, but steps IN FRONT of the speeding car.
Ah, thanks.
