A new poll shows a slight narrowing of the Opposition's lead over the Coalition, but a majority of voters prefer Labor's leadership team over the Liberals' John Howard and Peter Costello.
The Galaxy poll published in the Herald Sun newspaper indicates the Coalition has trimmed Labor's lead by two points.
But the ALP is still ahead by six points in the primary vote and by 12 points - 56 per cent to 44 per cent - on a two-party preferred basis.
Forty-six per cent of voters said they preferred Labor's leadership team of Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard, while 41 per cent preferred John Howard and Peter Costello.
Health Minister Tony Abbott seized on the 38 per cent of those surveyed who agreed with a description of Mr Rudd as "superficial" and "lacking policy substance".
"It seems the cult of St Kevin is at last being exposed," he said.
But Labor's environment spokesman Peter Garrett says Mr Rudd is doing a good job as the alternative prime minister.
"Kevin's one of the least superficial people I've ever met," he said.
The poll was taken over the weekend.
Newspoll put the 2PP at 55-45 in Labor's favour, from 59-41 in the previous poll.
Galaxy now puts it at 56-44, from 58-42 in their previous poll.
Labor is still in front - but considering they realistically need 53% of the 2PP vote to take office, things are now getting quite close.
Is John Howard going for it soon? Seems like there’s been a lot of hinting that the election will be called.
Good news!
The Coal better score a goal, or it’s Dhimmitude from Labor.
