When I registered to vote (albeit not in New York), I had to present only a signature (or other mark if illiterate) indicating affirmation to a statement of citizenship and eligibility. I also had to provide a name and address to place me in the proper precinct. No other form of identification was required or expected. The affirmation of citizenship deters aliens from voting quite effectively unless they’re Democrats or feign a lack of understanding of English.

Somehow I’m reminded of the mortgage companies decision to let people self certify their incomes. Now that worked out just great didn’t it?
