Rudy Giuliani told the National Rifle Association Friday that his own views on gun control have evolved in part due to the Sept. 11 attacks, which he said highlighted the importance of the Second Amendment right of allowing law-abiding citizens to carry guns.
Facing a group that he once likened to "extremists," Giuliani sought to temper his past strong support for national gun control laws by saying he could no longer support a lawsuit he filed as New York mayor in 2000, which was designed to hold gun-makers liable for gun violence.
Giuliani said "there have been subsequent intervening events -- Sept. 11 -- which casts somewhat of a different light on the Second Amendment and Second Amendment rights. It doesn't change the fundamental rights, but maybe it highlights the necessity for them more."
Giuliani has built his presidential campaign on convincing Republicans that his performance after the Sept. 11 attacks shows he is the strong leader America needs -- but it was the first time he had linked his personal views on gun control to the terror attacks.
The lawsuit -- which ironically was being debated in a New York appeals court Friday as well -- was one of the sharpest points of disagreement between Giuliani and the gun–rights lobby, which he criticized as President Bill Clinton's leading Republican ally in pushing for a national assault weapons ban.
Giuliani rival John McCain also criticized the former mayor's tactics Friday, calling it a "particularly devious effort to use lawsuits to bankrupt our great manufacturers. A number of big-city mayors decided it was more important to blame the manufacturers of a legal product than it was to control crime in their own cities."

An armed citizenry would not have prevented 9/11, but it will maintain the peace after any incident that results in the police being to busy to respond to ordinary crime, or where some disaster has taken out the 911 communications network
I understand that Rudy changed his view on "going commando" as a result of 9/11. He's also come out against bad carbs following 9/11. And, because of 9/11, he's sworn off onion bagels.
They were leaving that one to the GOA. As usual, the GOA didn’t do anything.
Let me know when they actually do something other than blame the NRA for not doing enough.

That having been said, I do believe they can "grow" in their beliefs, so I won't totally dismiss Rudy's conversion on GC.
Should it come down to Hillary/Rudy, he gets my vote, because I firmly believe he's a stalwart in the WOT.
All of that other garbage (guns, divorces, dresses, et al) doesn't much register with me until our battle for survival is won.
The reason I'm still leaning toward Fred is an issue I don't see raised much on this forum.
Rudy endorsed Mario Cuomo for governor of NY back in '94.

Rudy and Thompson are my favorites right now. I like what Fred had to say to the NRA, and I like how Rudy cleaned up New York. His book on leadership is also excellent.

What does anyone one care of history if the candidate is now singing the right words and hitching their cart to the right horses.
I’m for results versus intellectual purity... be it Rudy, Mitt, Fred, or whomever.
I know that the purest will attack.
BTW, I’m a handgun owner and shoot a couple times a week.
I will believe that 911 changed Rudy's views on gun rights the day he proposes and gets behind letting all pilots and any passengers that want to be armed carry on flights. That's the only way the 2nd amendment would have helped that day.
Until then, I personally believe his refering to 911 in this regard is way beyond opportune, it is disenginuin, and it is, in fact IMHO, obscene.
So, Mr. Giuliani, it was ok that you violated the Constitution in the past because you didn't feel the 2nd Amendment was "necessary." Nice try.
