It was this interview with Laura that convinced me that he knows precious little about policy — even as regards legislation that he co-sponsored while a Senator.

I’m not fond of policy wonks, but he’s a little too lightweight even for me.

Geez, could we not just get a honest “law of unitended consequences”

He could just say “we were trying to empower the voters by limiting money and it just went in a whole other direction.”

Lets not forget, the REASON McCain Feingold passed was because EVERYONE FIGURED OUT HOW TO BYPASS it.

“I’m not fond of policy wonks, but he’s a little too lightweight even for me.”

What are our options though?

Romney is a great policy wonk, he’s got 65 pages of strategy and positions:

... but although he’s running as a Reagan-style conservative now, he’s not trusted as a conservative due to past statements/positions.

Rudy and McCain are far worse than Thompson on the issues. Budget, taxes, immigration, social issues - they are all wrong.

And the rest of the candidates are single-digit wonders, going nowhere. Even the best fo them, Hunter, is barely a blip in the polls.

I think Thompson deserves to be raked over the coals thoroughly over this, but McCain, Romney and Rudy all have been wobbly on this issue too. OTOH, the FredHeads that act as if Thompson is Mr Perfect and therefore if he’s for something, it can’t be that bad ... yikes, that “lemmings jumping off a cliff” behavior scares me.
