I like Rudy. Sounds like Thompson wowed ‘em at NRA.

No, there was little or no change to the NYC gun laws under his tenure. And there was no possibility of loosening the draconian gun control laws, with the overwhelming majority of NYC voters in favor of keeping them.

Yet Rudy called for more federal gun laws. That seems to be one of the points that you don't want to address.

He wasn't just a passive participant, he was an active campaigner for stricter gun controls. And he sued gun manufacturers, blaming them for NYC street crime. He went well above just the laws he inherited.

Do you support gun control laws, so long as crime happens to go down?

No, I think free citizens should carry routinely and shoot-to-kill when they see a criminal committing a crime. With that policy, the serious crime problem in our big cities could never have developed in the first place.

I don’t disagree with you.

Rudy does, however.

Rudy was in NY when he was against guns and if any of you ever lived there you would understand, a lot to ask for now a days here at fred'srepublic.com

Still, he is a firm believer in states right and personal rights and as President he would defend our right to the 2 amendment.....

Go Rudy Go

Rudy was in NY

He can stay in New York.

he would defend our right to the 2 amendment.....

He's calling for a return of the Assault Weapons Ban. Where is that defending your Rights?

There is no difference between hillary and rudy. They are both opportunists and liars.

Cato Daily Dispatch

In "Individual Ruling: D.C. Gun Ban Goes Down," Cato senior fellow Robert Levy writes: "The Constitution forecloses an outright ban on handguns. Ergo, if we Americans decide that a ban is required for public safety, we must change the Constitution. We cannot simply ignore the constitutional provision and act as though the document did not exist. That's a recipe for lawlessness and mob rule. As a nation, we have chosen to have a written Constitution for good reason, and it has served us well for more than two centuries."

Deep down, I’m not sure he does. He really, really has it out for criminals. But my plan would have been DOA if any NYC politician had proposed anything of the sort. If you don’t live there, you can’t appreciate the mindset, and the utter foreignness of such ideas to nearly all New Yorkers. A couple of years ago, my department got a new secretary who was a pretty typical leftist New Yorker. I live in NYC during the week, because I work there, but I live in Pennsylvania on the weekends and routinely carry there. My Keltec P-32 lives in the side pocket of my shoulder bag, and goes with me every time I leave the house. I told this to the secretary, and she really truly thought I was joking, until other colleagues assured her that I was well-known for my “arsenal” and really did routinely carry in Pennsylvania; then she was shocked. They just can’t conceive of this, and any politician who tries to push them in the direction of sanity will be voted out at the next opportunity and the proposals will be instantly killed by the City Council, so won’t do any good anyway. Change in NYC gun laws is going to have to come from outside — federal and state courts.

Actually, he has it in for regular citizens as well, given his enthusiasm for using forfeiture laws to seize the property of people who have been acquitted of crimes. He doesn't love freedom, only authority.

Change in NYC gun laws is going to have to come from outside — federal and state courts.

True, but that has nothing to do with Rudy. He didn't just "inherit" gun laws he couldn't eradicate - he vigorously campaigned for new gun laws.

I'm astonished that someone who so respects the 2nd Amendment could defend Rudy, who has shown it nothing but contempt.

He’s obviously got deficiencies in the 2A area, but compared to realistic alternatives who actually stand a chance of getting elected as POTUS, he doesn’t particularly worry me, in part because I think he really is changing his views as he considers things from a national perspective.

You're far more charitable than I.

I see a crass politician changing his story because he thinks it will help him get elected.

his own words have shown him to be, shall we say, less than honest in the past. Why should I believe him now? The stakes are too high.

Don't you know that the only acceptable flip flops allowed on Free Republic are Fred's CFR, immigration, and abortion?

Rudy and Mitt are not allowed to change their stances on anything, because God Forbid someone may believe him. Another Free Republic rule, all bad Thompson articles are fear, all bad Rudy (or Mitt) articles are enshrined in the RudyTruthFiles.

Perhaps you have to have lived in NYC before and after Rudy to appreciate his effectiveness and his hostility to criminals. And again, look at the alternatives. The other viable Republicans have equally sketchy 2A records (but little or no record of effectiveness/aggressiveness in crime reduction), and the viable Democrats are openly pro-”gun control”.

New Yorker, born and bred.

I understand his hostility to criminals, it's his hostility towards law-abiding citizens that baffles me.

I don’t think he’s hostile to law-abiding citizens. His intent has always been to protect. His notions of how best to do that were shaped by having spent his entire life in NYC and having had to work within the legal system there. I think his views actually are changing, and we should loudly support him for that (regardless of whether we support him as the Republican nominee for President), because he’s highly respected by many New Yorkers who need to have their views on this topic re-oriented, and he is going around publicly spelling out a simple route to changing one’s position on this topic. He’s currently doing a heck of a lot more good than the NRA, when it comes to changing the popular conception of the Second Amendment among New York City residents and other people around the country who hold similarly befuddled notions about the Second Amendment. http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/us/AP-Giuliani-AP-Interview.html

He is most certainly hostile to law-abiding citizens. Surely you have read his quotes on bowing to authority or on the government's seizing property of people after they are acquited in a court of law. Not to mention his rather tenuous relationship with free speech.

"Highly respected by many New Yorkers"? I think you overstate it - we couldn't wait to get him out of office, even after he latched on to 9/11.

I read the article - not only did he repeatedly invoke September 11 as a mantra (no surprise there), he said that it was a court decision that caused him to change his decades-old opinions. Real strong convictions there, huh?

Rudy is a shameless huckster, a big-government nanny who only recently started mouthing the right things on the campaign trail. He deserves only derision from conservatives.
