Energy use continues to grow rapidly. Besides, the percentage of profit on the gross revenues of a power company are tiny.

Are you serious? Are you aware that power utilities are strictly controlled as to their rates and profit margins? They are guaranteed a profit margin which is determined by the PUC so they may continue to attract investors. Any innovation that saves energy and causes consumers to use less of it will impact the utilities profit margin. If the margin contracts the utility calls for and gets a rate increased. Conversely if the margins widen due to innovations of the power company then the PUC will force a rate decrease on them.
