Dr. Sessoms’ Statement Concerning N.J. Shooting Arrests
August 10, 2007

Delaware State University President Allen L. Sessoms released the following statement today in light of the announced arrests of two suspects in the Newark, N.J. shooting tragedy that resulted in the death of two DSU students and one prospective DSU student, as well as seriously wounded another DSU student:

“While we continue to grieve over the loss of the DSU students, we commend Mayor Corey Booker and the Newark NJ police authorities for their diligent investigation that has resulted in the arrest of a 15-year-old suspect and the subsequent surrender of a 31-year-old suspect,” Dr. Sessoms said. “The police clearly moved very quickly and in non-stop fashion to find those suspected this heinous and senseless act of violence.

“We look forward to the apprehension of any other perpetrators in the case. We applaud Natasha Aerial for her courage in providing law enforcement with invaluable assistance. We are hopeful for her complete physical and emotional recovery and look forward to embracing her upon eventual return to DSU.

“Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the families as they grieve the losses of their loved ones. I, along with a group of more than 60 DSU students, faculty and administrators, will be joining them on Saturday to pay our respects at the funerals of Dashon Harvey, Terrance Aeriel, and Lofemi Hightower.

“We will continue to keep their memories alive through a Memorial Service being organized on campus Aug. 28 when the full student body returns for the first day of fall semester. We have also established a Scholarship Fund to benefit students from New Jersey and a Relief Fund to provide assistance with the expenses to the families of these students. We encourage anyone who would like to donate to go to the DSU website (www.desu.edu).
