If we always deny that a terrorist has shot down a plane, then we render the terrorists’ attacks useless—because their acts of terror will never be known.

There may be a consensus about this among governments, IMHO.

Unless they blow up a dozen of them simultaneously or decide to start slamming them into skyscrapers. The deny and frustrate approach literally blew up in our face. We should have acknowledged and fought back.

We’ve had terrorist attacks since 9-11-2001 in America.

The anthrax mailings
The LAX Air Israel counter shooting
The Tampa Teen Kamekazi
The DC Sniper Duo
The guy who blew himself up outside the football stadium in Oklahoma
The Seattle Jewish Community Center shooting
The Utah mall shooting
The “Florida” Egyptian and Pakistani college kids who were apprehended in South Carolina with bomb materials (and jihadist training films they produce on their computer)

Additionally we’ve had 2 Americans convicted of training for jihad with Al Qaida AFTER the 9-11 attacks (both convicted this year, one in Texas, one in California).

Thwarted plots include blowing up the Brooklyn Bridge and the dirty bomb attack.

At the time, the authorities denied many of these were terrorist acts (including the Tampa Teen even when they held his suicide note which specifically called them terrorist acts and made a bomb threat against the Super Bowl).

Our government has been proven to lie about terrorist strikes when they happen on US soil. Keep us calm.

This is not to say that everything is an act of terrorist or requires a larger conspiracy plotting the action. I’m just pointing out that the government has routinely lied in such matters.

Agreed. At the time (1996) I assumed clinton would suppress this due to an election in a couple of months, but after seeing the Oklahoma University attempted bombing evolve on this forum a while back it does seem to be a clear understanding between government and the media, at a non-political level, to control coverage.

The AA crash in Queens in late 2001 is another example which might qualify.

Could be, but why would the terrorists would remain quiet? After all it is their intent to terrorize.
