In the lawsuit, Louen alleged, among other things, that she was leaving her subdivision when Twedt -- in uniform and on his department-issued motorcycle -- also came out of the subdivision and accelerated past her. She said he pulled into a driveway and "glared" at her as she passed.

He GLARED at her. The BEAST!

Yes, GLARING must be a capital crime now. How many years will he get for staring and glaring?? Sounds like the ‘thought police’ of the left got into this one. What a crock.

I imagine the costs are going to be pretty big. And she should pay!

I gotta disagree with you guys on this one... I know that ‘glaring’ wasn’t the real issue here. The incident where he purposely stopped in front of them at a green light tells you what kind of mutt this guy is. I’ve seen many many cops who drive like idiots - because THEY are the law. And when they’re off duty, they STILL drive like idiots and play games with other drivers. It’s a power thing. Stuff that’s hard to prove later on, but is downright abusive.
God bless the police in this country, but there are still many pockets of cop -good ol’ boys sects around..
just my 2 cents...

I saw no evidence, except her word that any of what she claims actually happened (blocking her at the intersection, for instance), yet you take it as gospel.

I don’t know what to say about this. There’s an awful lot missing from this story. The glaring incident was most assuredly NOT the reason for the suit.
I had neighbor who was a cop, and a fine fellow. However, I’ve also seen cops abuse their authority rather often, mostly traffic laws. One time it became personal to me: I was driving on a 50mph frontage road when a car ran a stop sign right in front of me, I slammed on the brakes and hit my horn. A short way up the road was a traffic signal and this guy slowed down to a stop far from the others in his lane. When I drove slowly past him in the adjacent lane, he accelerated to stay abreast and made some kind of gesture, flashed his badge at me and made another kind of visual scolding/threat gesture. I had nothing but contempt for the SOB. There are cops out there who think they ARE the law.

Earlier that year, Fresno County Superior Court Judge R.L. Putnam had granted a restraining order for Louen against Twedt, finding there was "clear and convincing evidence" that Twedt -- while on duty and off -- had intimidated her.

What's worse is that this crazy woman actually got a TRO against him. Fortunately, the legal system worked more-or-less correctly.
My understanding is that a) Anyone with a pulse can get a TRO and b) A TRO is an excellent club to use against a person in a legal dispute. Can any FReepers discuss?

How can one bring a lawsuit against somebody for glaring at them? Some will just settle because they cannot afford to hire a lawyer. The Korean immigrants offered $10,000 IIRC in the pants lawsuit. It was rejected and the case went on, the crazy judge asking for millions. Is this a great country or what?
To: grjr21
“This judge thought differently “
And in an 8 to ZERO decision, the jury thought the judge was full of crap.

There was a little more than glaring according to the article. Still, complaints to Internal Affairs and a normal run of the mill lawsuit should have sufficed. I think the jury did the right thing here.

You MUST believe everything SHE alleged. Oh, her husband collaborated the story? ~That~ makes it true!
BTW, I’ve sat through entire green lights while fiddling with dash before, glad no one sued me.
