Mayor Jerry Sanders reversed his position on gay marriage Wednesday, supporting it in emotional remarks punctuated by pauses, shaking sips of water and his wife's hand resting one time reassuringly on his back. Sanders' wife, Rana Sampson, stood next to him as he acknowledged publicly for the first time that his daughter, Lisa, is a lesbian.
I've decided to lead with my heart, which is probably obvious right now, to do what I think is right and to take a stand on behalf of equality and social justice, Sanders said. A day after staff members said Sanders would veto it, the mayor announced that he would sign a City Council resolution passed Tuesday that directed the City Attorney's Office to file a brief in support of gay marriage.
The council voted 5-3 to send the brief to the state Supreme Court backing an end to the state's ban on same-sex marriage. Similar briefs have been sent by other cities, which like San Diego, are not directly involved in the case.
Almost 200 people attended the council hearing on the issue, with gay marriage supporters arguing for equal treatment under the law, and opponents contending marriage should be between a man and a woman.
As I reflected on the choices that I had before me last night I could just not bring myself to tell an entire group of people in our community they were less important, less worthy or less deserving of the rights and responsibilities of marriage than anyone else simply because of their sexual orientation, Sanders said.
In a reference to his daughter and two staff members who are gay, he said, I want for them the same thing that we all want for our loved ones, for each of them to find a mate whom they love deeply and loves them back, someone with whom they can grow old together and share life's experiences, and I want their relationships to be protected equally under the law.
In his 2005 mayoral campaign, Sanders said he supported civil unions and domestic partnerships but not gay marriage.
I have personally wrestled with that opinion ever since, he said Wednesday his voice wavering. My opinions on this issue have evolved significantly as I think the opinions of millions of Americans from all walks of life have.
In a nod to those who don't support gay marriage, he said, I acknowledge that not all members of our community will agree or even understand.
NOOOO!!! What a sell out spineless piece of.... Rodger Hedgcock better be all over his ass like white on rice.
As opposed to leading with logic and reason.
He's got him on tomorrow to talk about the Enrique Morones protest as well. Morones with bullhorns 50' away shouting down a gathering honoring Pete Wilson is fine, but Minutemen protesting Elvira the Illegal alien must be 300' away and our of sight. Sanders said that decision was based on legal principles, but it wasn't.

Yep, thats the kind of strong leadership people respect.
Glad I didn't vote for that clown. I'm curious what the response of James Hartline will be. That guy is way out there, but he was in that "community" and knows how the lifestyle can destroy.
As a SD resident I am both sadenned yet unmoved. God makes my laws and no man can overturn those laws by proclamation, vote nor tort.
There is no doubt a father loves a daughter. There is also no doubt he wants his daughter to have a joyful life. Yet what is wrong with disagreeing with the sin and loving the sinner as Jesus did. Here he is loving the sin and the sinner and supporting the sin as law because a loved one is a sinner.
Evil works in mysterious and tricky ways. One soul at a time and then a city. Sad. Hope San Diego bites back and rises up. Just because his moral compass is off, doesn't mean the city needs to stand for this.
LOL!
Yep. I am on board with you. my sentiments exactly.
If he really loved his daughter he would try to get her the psychiatric help she so desperately needs.
Wow. So Sanders turns out to be a scumbag....
It sounds to me like somebody has some dirt on him.
Just what I thought.
Caught him playing footsie in a Balboa Park men's room, perhaps.

Do you ever wonder what Saint Diego and Saint Francis would have to say about the fact that towns named after them had descended down to this?
Yes and the spiritual help as well or atleast set and example.
THe answer for him is not to support gay marriage, but instead to love his daughter, but to realize she is in sin, and must repent, she can be helped to escape, not endure in that lifestyle!
I hate this tactic employed by the gay movement that in order that equates accepting of their sin is necessary for acceptance of them as people. It’s pathetic, and based on emotion rather than real world data, and real morality!!
Sniveling selfish ass.
It’s about way more then YOU Sanders.
Attacking the pillars of our society for special privlages for the self victimized vocal few is WRONG.
What shame. I voted for this guy. He was not my first choice for mayor either, my instincts were right about him.
EFFING RINOS!

Why not?
This isn’t about some “inherent worth”; its about what we as a culture want our children to emulate and how they should be raised to become productive contributors. The ONLY reason for the state to sponsor marriage at all is to promote the stable relationships children need.
And you don’t get that in ‘mo households. Its impossible. You don’t get it in single parent households. You only have a chance of getting it in man-woman households. Hence the “special priveleges” granted to man-woman couples.
