CERES, Calif. -- A Ceres toddler accidentally shot herself to death Wednesday using a handgun she found in her home, police say.

Authorities said they received a call at 7:42 a.m. reporting a shooting at a home on Ninth Street.

The 2-year-old girl, who was not immediately identified, was pronounced dead at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto.

Police said the girl's parents were being questioned by investigators.

"There's really nothing to make us believe at this point that they're not telling us the true story, but we certainly have an obligation to either substantiate that or not support it by physical evidence," said Sgt. Allen McKay of the Ceres Police Department.

McKay said the child managed to find a medium-caliber handgun that was left unsecured in the home.

Ceres police said they found methamphetamine and materials to make the drug inside the home.

The child's father, 26-year-old Felix Arellano is on felony parole, and should not have been in possesion(sic) of a gun in the first place, police said.

Pools are hundreds of times more dangerous than guns, in deaths per year. We should ban pools immediately. It’s for the children.

I’m betting the 2 year old was not to blame.

The knee jerk response will be to make it harder for law abiding citizens to have guns.

Prayers for the child.

I don’t blame the gun. I believe that everyone has the right to own and keep a gun provided they first spend some time in national service.

hmm so I guess when a soldier sees a terrorist he should try to drown him in a pool instead of shooting. :)

Good idea. Since he’s a gang member, though, don’t expect much.

The legislature could spend the next 9 months doing nothing but passing gun laws that the governator signs before the ink dries and that mutt would still leave a loaded gun where his 2 year old would get it. However, if that parolee were still behind bars, then we'd have some progress in keeping children (and the rest of us) safe.

No doubt the ghouls will be all over this in short order.

Might as well point out at this point that California’s “safe storage law” (Penal Code Section 12035) did not protect this child from her tweaker felon dope dealer/cooker dad...

More ammo for the gun-haters. We’ll be surprised to find out in the coming days that toddler deaths by handgun are becoming an epidemic.

I know nothing about this, but I don’t believe it. I am not sure a 2 year old could pull the trigger on a cocked pistol.

uhh, are you sure you are in the right place? This is Free Republic. We support the Second Amendment. We do not, however, support the behavior of mopes who leave their guns out for children to play with.

Seems the MSM is pushing domestic insecurity.

You sure you are in the right place?

That type of comment belongs with the anti-gun crowd. It is the same bs that has people in other countries who have to keep their guns in government approved lock ups.

Clue ~ this guy probably got one of Kennedy’s amnesties earlier. Without amnesty he wouldn’t have been here to kill his 2 year old.
