In ("Coming clean about CAIR") I wrote about the amicus brief filed by the Council on American-Islamic Relations in the Holy Land Foundation prosecution. To its chagrin, CAIR has been named an unindicted co-conspirator in the case. Although it holds itself out as a civil rights group, the government's evidence in the case has revealed CAIR -- to quote its amicus brief -- "as a terrorist front organization."
I found one aspect of CAIR's brief of particular interest. It repeatedly asserted that the governments identification of CAIR has harmed it in two ways. It alleged that as a result of being named an unindicted co-conspirator it has suffered serious reduction in its membership and donations. CAIR did not itself file any evidence to support these propositions. Rather, in footnotes supporting these statements CAIR cited Audrey Hudsons June 11, 2007 (Washington Times story on CAIRs membership decline). At the time of the publication of Hudsons story this past June, however, CAIR vociferously disputed its accuracy. In a June 12 press release, CAIR assserted:
"CAIR today accused a right-wing Washington, D.C., newspaper of agenda-driven reporting for falsely suggesting there has been a drop in its grassroots support. According to CAIR, an article in todays Washington Times newspaper misrepresented figures on its tax filings to falsely indicate a drop in membership."
Citing Hudson's story in support of its argument, CAIR confirmed Hudsons story. CAIRs contemporaneous statement disputing the accuracy of Hudsons story was a falsehood compounded by CAIR's defamation of Hudson and the Times.
In its brief CAIR continued to mislead when it suggested that Hudsons story supported its argument in the Holy Land Foundation case. The government named CAIR as an unindicted co-conspirator of the Holy Land Foundation this past spring. Hudsons Washington Times story was based on data covering the period 2000-2006, before CAIR was named as an unindicted co-conspirator. CAIRs citation of Hudsons story in support of the argument made in its amicus brief piled one convenient falsehood on top of another.
CAIR is none too pleased with Hudson. Having used her work to support its argument in the Holy Land Foundation case, CAIR has now availed itself of an Orwellian stratagem to deal with her. It has airbrushed Hudson from its site and sent her down the memory hole. At (Junkyard Blog) See-Dubya reports that CAIR has scrubbed references to Hudson from its site. Reached yesterday, Hudson commented: "I stand by my stories. If only I still existed."
Islamism and Communism - same attitude and tactics, just different vehicles.
