The Oakland Police Department has asked the FBI to investigate accusations by City Council President Ignacio De La Fuente that investigators pumped up rape and assault charges against his son to embarrass the council president just as he was gearing up to run for mayor.
The FBI has yet to respond to the request and may turn it down. If it does, Oakland officials said they will bring in other outside investigators to review the case.
"These charges are very serious," Police Chief Wayne Tucker said Tuesday. "We want the facts known."
City Attorney John Russo, who was in on the decision to ask for the FBI's help, said, "We want to make sure this is being handled objectively. We want to make sure there are no questions left unanswered."
The city's request was triggered by allegations De La Fuente made in this column Sunday and on a Web site, www.delafuenteconspiracy.com.
De La Fuente and his wife said a private investigator they hired to look into the case against their son, Ignacio De La Fuente Jr., uncovered "clear indications of police misconduct that included falsified and altered police reports, witness coercion and plain dirty politics."
The younger De La Fuente, 34, pleaded guilty in May to five felony sex assault charges involving attacks on three prostitutes and a 15-year-old girl he may have mistaken for a prostitute.
De La Fuente Sr. conceded that his son apparently had picked up prostitutes and hadn't paid them, but said there was no evidence of rape or assault. He also said there were members of the Police Department who "went out of their way to make this case more important than any other case."

This stunt will bring the family shame back to the front pages again!(although he himself has no shame)He made very serious charges in an off-the-cuff manner.While thinking he was helping his son's cause,he has unwittingly invited the feds into the whole mess.That's a local call,however,as the FBI has been investigating the circus known as the Oakland City government for some time now.If incompetence were a crime,they'd all be looking at long stretches. This very delusional man is currently the president of the Oakland City Council.
Some observers attribute his behavior to a small shard of brain that was found lodged in his skull.
