I tell you, NASCAR is sliding fast down hill. First Toyota joins cup, then Juan Pablum Montoya, then more crazy rules. Next we can look forward to Franchitti and possibly other non-american IRL drivers. They should look at what happened to CART.

“MOORESVILLE, N.C. — Robert Yates confirmed today he is retiring the No. 88 from Robert Yates Racing (RYR) following the last race of the 2007 NASCAR Nextel Cup season. He is requesting NASCAR transfer the number to Hendrick Motorsports and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. for use in competition for the 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

“Ralph Earnhardt drove the No. 88 Olds in 1957 and because of this number’s history with the Earnhardt family; I felt car number 88 should continue with Dale Earnhardt, Jr.,” Yates said.

“Younger fans don’t realize I built cars and raced against Ralph. I also had a very close relationship with Dale Earnhardt, Sr. I’m proud to transfer this number to Dale Jr. and let him know how much I appreciate the friendship and competitive racing I’ve always enjoyed with his family,” Yates continued.”

He doesn’t want to at this point in time, he wants to be his own man and not compared to his father. He’s said maybe at the end of his career he may drive it.

Eury leaving DEI for Hendrick earlier than expected

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Tony Eury Jr. will leave Dale Earnhardt Inc. for Hendrick Motorsports earlier than expected, team officials confirmed on Thursday.

Eury, who has been Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s car or crew chief for all but one season since the two broke into the Nextel Cup Series in 2000, will step down after the Oct. 7 race at Talladega Superspeedway.

He will be allowed to take four members of Earnhardt’s No. 8 team with him under a deal made by DEI when it agreed to free him contractually to join Earnhardt at HMS in 2008.
