SAN FRANCISCO - Air New Zealand is delving into the gay and lesbian market with a special themed flight featuring drag queens, pink cocktails and a cabaret performed by flight crew.
The destination for the airline's one-time "Pink Flight," on Feb. 26, ex San Francisco, is the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras in Sydney, Australia, one of the world's most well-attended gay events, said Jodi Williams, an Air New Zealand marketing director.
"We're tailoring inseat entertainment with gay-friendly movies, contests, different music and things like that," Williams said. The airline also plans to throw a going away party for passengers, who will pay an average of $1,000 roundtrip.
The flight is modeled after an Auckland-to-Sydney trip Air New Zealand made this year for the gay Mardi Gras. Before that full flight, the crew put on pink feather boas and sang for its couple of hundred passengers, she said.
"Even the pilot was wearing fairy wings and got into it," Williams said.
Michael Wilke, executive director of a New York-based advertising advocacy group Commercial Closet Association, said American, Air Canada and other airline companies have become visible sponsors of gay pride events, but none had so far used campy programming to appeal to gay and lesbian travelers.
"They could probably do very well with it," Wilke said. "It really sounds like someone put together the idea of what a gay cruise is and just applied that to the air. And even gay cruises don't feature employees in particular outfits or gay-themed movies."
Air New Zealand's Williams said the airline is still working out some details of the flight plan, like what will go inside the passengers' goodie bags. The trip takes 14 hours so the airline will schedule in some down time during the overnight flight.

I hope the airline plans to steam clean and disinfect the cabin of that plane before the next flight.
A lot of disgusted 'regular' passengers will certainly go away from the airline, and stay away.
“Gays” always seem to have a lot of money and I’ve yet to figure out how that happens.
If anyone else did this, it would be considered a hateful stereotype.
Gay friendly movies and in-flight entertainment?
Well, they can show movies such as “Philadelphia” and “Brokeback Mountain”, followed by episodes of “The L Word” and “Will and Grace”. Maybe they can even get reruns of “View” episodes with Rosie O’Donnell opening her pie hole to educate all of us.

They don’t have to spend money raising kids the way breeders do.
I think part of it is that few homosexuals have children or family reponsibilities, so they have more money to spend on themselves than many people do.
Do I really need to comment?
Or, they could see Gaystapo campaign speeches by Hitlery and Giussolini...

What if I’m not gay and get stuck (no pun intended) on this queerfest flight? I think I’ll be rich.......

,,, "so you've stopped using your country's airline to get here Helen? Yeah, right!"
HOW THAT HAPPENS IS THEY ARE all over Hollywood, the tv shows, writers, designers, etc. They hire each other--that is what is wrong with the quality of shows, clothes, etc. I think it was Cecil B. DeMille who said (paraphrased) he was glad to be retiring because hmosexuals and violence had taken over Hollywood. If not DeMille, one of the huge studio names.
vaudine

How much are they charging to ride in the cockpit?
,,, two or three years ago Air New Zealand caused a bit of a stir and Qantas matched it by implenting a seating policy whereby children flying unaccompanied by an adult couldn’t be seated by a man. I’m uncertain whether that still stands but that was enough for me.
Dude, when the pilot prances out in pink boas and fairy wings....I have a law suit.....I want the pilot to actually fly the plane, not be concerned with who's smoking whoms.....errrrr. private parts
Good job, no wife, no kids LOL!
