Jesusland Not Buying McBaptist
Christian News Wire ^ | Sept. 17, 2007 | David Jeffers

Posted on 09/17/2007 9:17:03 AM PDT by Between the Lines

While campaigning in predominately Baptist South Carolina, presidential candidate Senator John McCain (R-Az.), revealed that he is Baptist and has been for years. This new revelation will come as a shock for most in Jesusland, according to David Jeffers, author of Understanding Evangelicals: A Guide to Jesusland. "Evangelicals, and in this case those of the Baptist faith, are not going to be easily swayed by McCain's pandering," Jeffers said.

Jeffers explains that "Many of the Baptist faith are going to have a hard time accepting McCain's claim that he is a Baptist while saying he 'did not find it (baptism) necessary to do so for my spiritual needs." "Baptism is not followed to meet spiritual needs; it is an act of obedience and a public profession of faith in Jesus Christ," the author stated.

"It is this type of pandering that evangelicals are used to seeing from the Democratic side. To see it coming from a self-proclaimed 'conservative Republican' is not going to play well in Jesusland" said Jeffers. The author stated he "would completely expect something like this from Hillary Clinton or Howard Dean, but to see McCain stoop to this is a sign of his desperation to save his campaign."

Even though McCain states he is an "active member" of North Phoenix Baptist Church, Jeffers said McCain's personal stance on baptism is in direct conflict with the church's belief statement on baptism. Jeffers claims North Phoenix' claim "through baptism, we announce our commitment to the church and our desire to live a life following the example of Jesus Christ," definitely shows that McCain is out of step with his own church. Jeffers explains that baptism by immersion is what makes Baptists Baptist!

Jeffers reminds McCain that Proverbs 16:23 teaches "a wise man's heart guides his mouth," and in Jesusland it is not wise to claim to be something you are not.

McQueeg thinks he can be an unbaptised Baptist? Well, look at his record as a “conservative Republican.” Can’t blame the nut for trying again.

He's still an Episcopalian. Only a Piskie would say something like "I did not find it necessary to do so for my spiritual needs."

(It's all about having it your own way in the Episcopal church).

Serious theological question here: Do Baptists rebaptise Episcopal converts? Thanks in advance fot the answer.

What a stupid man this author is.

Was McCain baptized into another faith? It clearly states that his family joined the church, and he attends with them. He just didn’t formally join. So he can’t claim to be a Baptist? Hogwash.

Well, maybe if I can be a baptised un-Baptist, he can be an unbaptised Baptist

Depends on what type of Baptist.

Most Primitive Baptists DO re-baptize, if you weren't originally baptized as an adult after a profession of faith, or by total immersion. Other, less strict, Baptist churches do not re-baptize Methodists or Episcopalians, even though the overwhelming majority were baptized by sprinkling or pouring, and as infants.

Of course, since the Baptist governance is congregational, I imagine you have almost as many variations as you have churches.

- I'm not a Baptist but I grew up with a bunch of them, being here in the South.

Funny...I thought you were for folks leaving ECUSA and converting to another denomination.

I don’t care if he’s Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, Catholic, Jew or Morman. Crazy has no religious boundaries.

Not necessarily. They have to really convert, and it sounds from the way McCain's talking that he hasn't, he's just parking in a different pew on Sunday.

You don't want Episcopalians coming into your church and bringing the sameold sameold attitudes with them. Sort of like Jimmuh Carter trying to remake the Baptist church in his own image.

Or like all those people from California who move to Arizona and Idaho, and straightway start trying to make it 'just like home', to the discomfiture of the natives.

Well, how 'bout that!

Nothing like a little research!

(I still won't vote for him, his religious affiliation means absolutely zilch to the overall question of his total lack of suitability for the presidency.)
