I think if a person fills two seats, they should buy two seats, if the plane is going to be full.

If it’s not, and there’s room to seat the passenger where he or she will not inconvenience someone else, I say no harm, no foul.

Considering he was at the boarding gate, they basically made him buy a ticket for a seat that had not been sold.

Amen to your statement. If you've ever been forced to give up from 25% to 33% of your seat to a person who cannot fit within the arm rests, use their seat belt without an extender or lower the table top, you understand what SW is attempting to do.

I have had such an event occur and the same airline and flight attendants that refused to let me fly with one leg in a cast and the arm rest of the empty adjacent seat raised "for safety reasons" -- permitted the obese person to pull up the arm rest before being seated, required a seat belt extender, then proceeded to place their drink on my table top, as my "seat mate" was unable to lower hers. I believe that happened because I happen to be 5' 1" and weigh 104 lbs so they assumed I did NOT NEED a whole seat to myself.

There will be no next time, for that ever again to happen!!! I'll demand a seat in first class, a different seat for the person using my seat as well as his/hers, or he/she purchase two seats, as long as they require that much room!

Bingo. I was at SeaTac a couple of months ago, and there was a guy who weighed probably 400 lbs. I was just glad he did not sit by me, because he would have definitely been encroaching on my space.

And good for Southwest! Put the responsibility where it belongs - on the passenger. If he/she chooses to weigh that much, he/she should at least be considerate enough to buy that extra seat. Period.

Its hard for people to accept especially those that have to pay extra. BUT the first time you sit next to someone and have their fat folds laying in your lap you will need extensive therapy to recover.

I think if they encroach on the person(s) sitting next to them they should have to buy that seat. I don't want some slob's arm and leg in my area. Just eat less! It always works. If you take in less calories than you burn, you lose weight. Law of chemistry/physics. Don't give me that 'genetics' stuff.

That’s what I was thinking. It should be easy enough to see if there are extra seats that could be used to accommodate this guy.

Otherwise, well, I wouldn’t want to be squeezed in next to him even though I am a tiny, fit woman. (ha)

Yeah, but think of what the fatties are doing to Global Warming. I don’t Think anyone that is more that 15% overweight should fly. If they do it should be a cargo plane. There should be a fat tax.

Get our airplane tickets by the pound.

It's only no harm if there is enough room for every passenger to have two seats.

Skinny people like to spread out, too.
