World should brace for possible war over Iran: France

World should brace for possible war over Iran: France Sep 16 02:44 PM US/Eastern The world should brace for a possible war over the Iranian nuclear crisis but seeking a solution through talks should take priority, French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said on Sunday.

"We have to prepare for the worst, and the worst is war," he said in an interview broadcast on French television and radio.

"We must negotiate right to the end," with Iran, he said, but underlined that if Tehran possessed an atomic weapon, it would represent "a real danger for the whole world."

"We are trying to put in place plans which are the privilege of chiefs of staff and that is not for tomorrow," he said, referring to military plans but stressed that although any attack on Iran was far from taking place, "It is normal for us to plan" for any eventuality.

Kouchner said France wanted the European Union to prepare sanctions against Iran, outside the ambit of the UN Security Council, to force Tehran to forsake its nuclear ambitions.

"We have decided that while negotiations are continuing ... to prepare eventual sanctions outside the ambit of UN sanctions. Our good friends, the Germans, suggested that," he said.

The foreign minister also said leading French companies such as Total and Gaz de France had been urged not to undertake new work or contracts in Iran.

Iran vehemently denies Western allegations it is seeking an atomic weapon, saying its nuclear drive is aimed at providing electricity for a growing population whose fossil fuels will one day run out.

The five permanent Security Council members -- Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States -- plus Germany are due to meet to discuss a new draft UN resolution on sanctions against Iran on September 21

I agree with your assessment. There is supposedly an undercurrent of support for the west in Iran. Make tactical strikes to take out military targets to weaken the government, then sit back and see what develops. No ground troops may be necessary.

I tried it. You need to enter the following /a with angle brackets around it after the URL. And it only worked in my browser after entering the URL in a separate tab to cache it. ...angelfire configuration, perhaps? ...or BMP files?

As a whole, perhaps, but individually they are as tough as they come. If they can ever act somewhat together for a few days they would be be able to take on Iran no problem.

I’m lucky to make the html I know work. I better just stay away from the bmp files. Thanks.

But then I'm a realist and not a dreamer.

We should not tell the Democrats what we are doing until it’s all over. They can complain then.

Surrendering has been outsourced. Mexicans are now doing the jobs the French used to do....and they did that well!

My first reaction to such statements is that France needs access to fresh intel from us. They’ve run out of things to give away to our enemy.

France has a reputation of doing just that ever since the end of WW2 in europe.

I dont trust em. Not even a little bit. France isn’t run by any elected leadership. It’s almost completely run and operated by life long bureaucrats, just like our own State Department.

There ya go....I got that one. This negotiating just doesn’t get the job done. all the time we talked with the UN the weapons were being transported out of the country. Talking doesn’t do it....talking just gets more or OUR PEOPLE killed! We either go full bull or none at all.

Nuking a country because they want to develop nukes. Kinda ironic. Anyway, IMO, ain't gonna happen.

But a massive aerial attack against their military and nuclear development installations is quite possible. This is why 20,000 lb MOP's are being fitted to stealth bombers these days.

“It looks like the grownups are finally in control in France.”

The great thing is; that at the very least; France won’t work against us in a matter like this.

Iran could be hobbled overnight. Hit their refineries (they have nine), major military installations, and nuke development facilities.

If we really wanted to inflict pain, we could take out a few critical dams...

IMO, when France says that Iran might be attacked, this doesn’t mean that France will be attacking. Rather, it means that France would not object to the USA attacking.

Perhaps not objecting in advance, but be sure that they will wail when it happens that, "All diplomatic avenues were not exhausted." and therefore they will condemn the US action after the fact. Nevertheless being very happy that it happened.

French foreign policy is all about having your cake and eating it too.

WHY would the Frogs do ANYTHING to, or over, Iran? I like his thinking, but I doubt France would follow him.
