“What good are the other rights if you don’t have a right to life”

Fred Thompson is just another politician and wants to have it both ways. Having no opinion on the Teri Schaivo case should disqualify him from the presidency. I bet he does have an opinion but if stated, he’d be in more trouble with people who still think Life is an inalienable right.

Is federalist position is one of convenience and is a cop out for answering questions on divisive issues. This article proves it. It’s up to the states to decide who’s life is worth living but the federal government is responsible for public education. Right to life is about 50/50 but public education is, maybe, 90/10.

Horrible as it is, I would settle for life being a state issue (ugh!) if I thought the federalism principle would be applied consistently. But in reality it is trotted out only in an effort to fight conservatives during disagreements like the Shaivo case. If a husband were seeking to execute a healthy wife with the blessings of a state judge (the state legislators wanted to help Terry) then I would certainly hope the federal gov’t would step in. Terry’s husband shouldn’t have even been considered her husband legally since he was living with and having children with another woman.
