I have heard that cocker spaniels are one breed that is likely to cause problems for mail carriers. They also look like they have strong jaws.
There is a link to a pdf file in post 25 that give a breed breakdown. I’m sure they’re in there, but not enough so as to be significant.
All dog breeds are potentially dangerous. I love dogs, and always will despite getting severe bites from 3 dogs when I was a kid. The first was a black lab that chased me while I road a skate board past his driveway. He took a chunk out of my hamstring just under my buttox.
The second was a German Shepard that might have killed me if the owners didn’t react fast. I was delivering their newspaper. The dog was in their house sitting in the hallway about 5 feet from the screen door. I opened the screen door, put the paper on the floor and turned to walk away. Before the screen door shut the dog burst through it and clamped his jaws on the back of my neck and took me to the ground. The owners came screaming from the litchen and got the dog off of me.
The third time I was at a friends house petting his cocker spaniel. I had played with this dog on many occasions. This time it up and decided to bite my hand as I was petting it. Took the nail clean off my index finger. The owners were horrified.
all these attacks occured in the 1970’s. My parents never even considered lawsuits. Blood was drawn in all three attacks. Imagine that in this day and age? I’d probably be rich.
My point:all dogs can cause damage. Dogs are carnivores, loyal pack animals, agressive, and possess the instinct to hunt game. Check out their jaws and teeth. Come on people.
That being said, I love my Swiss Mountain Dog. She’s a wonderful pet. But I would NEVER leave her alone with my two kids (age 2 and 1). NEVER.
And a Pit Bull?! Why take the chance on such a breed? Any large dog that enters my property un-supervised is asking for it. They approach my wife or kids in an aggressive manner - they’re dead. No jury in the world would convict you.
