EAGLES UP!!! Count me in. I cannot call so much because of the time zone difference and astronomical phone bills from here, but be assured I will e mail and fax like crazy, and will also alert 10 additional family members and friends stateside to do the same!!

I called my Senators Dodd and Lieberman this morning. Aids in both offices were not familiar with the bill. I had to give them the bill number so they could look it up.

Great! It was just that kind of attitude that let the Dems win the Congress in 2006. Just sit right there on your high horse, the view of another Clinton admin will be spectacular from up there.
If all the others here can call Hillary, Durbin, and Kennedy(and many other loathsome creatures), I don’t see why anyone couldn’t hold their nose and make their voice heard.

Hard to know where to start, there are so many awful things about these amendments.
I’ll take two issues:
On the Dream Act, what legal and official home-country documentation is required to prove the identity of the applicant? As with the Z1 visa, I would presume NONE. Which means anyone can apply under any name and identity they choose to assume. Criminals, foreign agents, those wanting a second “official” identity with imprimateur of the United States, etc. Maybe I’ll apply for Dream Act status (male, Caucasian, 40’s) a Pole, Lithuanian, or Estonian illegal alien.
As for the L-1 visa, this is the Microsoft/Tata Dream Act. It’s a very simple process for companies with operations in both the U.S. and abroad (say INDIA!!!!) to assert that “Our INDIAN employee X has special skills and therefore we must bring him the U.S.” on an L-1 “intracompany transfer”.
Two highlights: (a) DO NOT ASSUME the employee is to do coding in some backoffice capacity, he may very well be a billable consultant who’s billed out at $150/hr but is paid 1/2 or 3/4 the comparable U.S. rate for his skills.
I know an Indian fellow who did this very thing in NYC, putting 50+ Indian nationals on the payroll under L-1 and paying them 1/2 U.S rates (but twice Indian rates), and billing them out at 70 to 80 percent of the comparable rate for U.S. engineers to financial services firms, and building his business in this manner which he quickly sold for a few million $$$. His “competitive edge” was shameless and relentless abuse of the U.S. L-1 visa and the fraudulent ghost “consultancy” in India. Tata and Microsoft do precisely the same thing but on a larger scale. Who pays? American entrepreneurs and engineers.
Point (b) is much simpler: when an American firm is bidding on a labor contract abroad, it simply brings employees in on a standard work visa for 6 months or a year or whatever. I’ve worked abroad on several contracts and have written proposals for foreign projects, and ***I know of no country in the world which would offer an American consultant or engineer permanent residency as a consequence of working on a contract in that country***!!!!!! And a FAST TRACK TO CITIZENSHIP IN THAT COUNTRY!?!?!?!?! YOU HAVE GOT TO BE INSANE! NO COUNTRY DOES THIS, ANYWHERE!
It angers me that Americans are so oblivious to the wider world that they don’t see the grossly exceptional folly and foolishness that’s being built into our labor and visa regulations. NO OTHER COUNTRY ON EARTH IS THIS STUPID!!!!!
(Sorry for the CAPS, but this really, really irritates me).

Not a surprise. We are battle weary, but must fight on.
Mike Huckabee pushed for the State version of the Dream Act in Arkansas. This is the man who wants to be POTUS!!
God help us.

My Congressman (Todd Platts) will vote the right way, but my two senators, Specter and Casey, are worthless, and it will be a waste of time trying to convince them to vote against this mess. We understand your frustrations. But try anyway----ya never know---you might be the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back.
