If celebrity made them broke, they wouldn’t pursue it. After sex, it’s all about the money.

I disagree. Working in industry pays much better for Ph.D. researchers than does academics, and private practice pays much better for M.D.s than does academics, but some people still covet the academic jobs. Part of that choice is the perceived stature that goes along with being at a recognized university. Look at the number of ‘instructors’ and assistant professors in the Harvard system, and how little they’re willing to work for just to stay at Harvard, despite the fact they could make often double or more what they’re making there and get promoted or tenured.

If celebrity made them broke, they wouldnt pursue it. After sex, its all about the money. University professorships are not all that lucrative. Upper middle class if you're lucky and have tenure. But the celebrity status is primarily amongst peers for most researchers. The big money is in industry where higer salaries are augmented with performance bonuses and cash for intelletual property.
