Aside from his leading in the polls - based on the desire for a truly conservative candidate - I haven’t heard much good reported about Fred. I’m waiting for him to develop a clear position on the issues; so far, I’m hearing lots of good conservative ideals, but not a lot of substance. And this Osama bin Laden due process crap - what’s that all about? Do we need a trial for that guy? Geez.

I put no stock in anything that comes out of Democrats.org, but even a broken clock can be right twice a day. I don't understand the fervor with which so many fellow conservatives have embraced Fred. They seem to have projected all their hopes and fantasies of a perfect Reaganesque conservative onto him, and I just don't see it. He has that homespun, rock-ribbed facade, but he backed McCain-Feingold (an assault on the First Amendment that's one of the bigger reasons why I wouldn't vote for McCain); his Senate record's not very impressive, neither in proposing legislation nor in standing up for conservative values; his speeches are dull, listless and full of cliches and few real ideas; some of his lobbying efforts don't smell so good; and there is some personal stuff that I am cringing waiting for the lib media to reveal at the worst possible time. Also, he has no executive experience, which wipes out a major advantage that a GOP governor or mayor would have running against Hillary, Obama or Edwards. It would level the field to a choice between two lawyer-turned-senators.

Don't get me wrong; if Fred is the nominee, I'll crawl over broken glass to vote for him; but I think some of his ardent supporters are indulging in wish fulfillment fantasies that border on the self-delusional. Any policy disagreement with any other candidate is enough to shout, "I'll NEVER vote for (fill in the blank)", but Fred is perfect in every way, and pointing out any flaws is heresy.

BTW, before the usual catcalls of "Liberal troll!!" start flying: My late dad helped launch the Republican Party in Texas, I've had 40 years experience working in GOP politics and the media, I've been a Freeper since 1998, and I calls it the way I sees it.

It's amazing how much importance is given to people who are trying out to be the Bureaucrat-in-Chief, which is all the Presidency has become. You can count the great presidents we have had on one hand. Most of them are as engaging as warm spit. After Reagan, it seems that we are now in a period as existed after Lincoln--mediocre or corrupt "leaders" who leave no imprint upon American history and are unworthy of remembrance. Clinton and both Bushes fit that bill, and none of the current candidates strike me as being any different at all.

Thompson Not Winning Over Prominent Supporters:

I'd rank them as follows:

First place - Duncan Hunter. He's head and shoulders above the competition with his conservative credentials.

Tied for second place - Mike Huckabee/Tom Tancredo.

Thompson is a solid fourth place (in other words, I'll vote for him only if we can't get one of the first three.

I've got Romney at fifth place, and I'd have to do some soul searching, but I could pull the lever for him.

Gulioni, McCain and Paul are unworthy - I'd definately vote third party before I'd vote for one of these pretenders.

George Will and Robert Novak are part of the "Inside the Beltway" RINO Club. They are out of touch with us out here in "Flyover Country". I wouldn't vote for them either!
