Years ago, in what had to be one of the more embarrassing moments of his career, the mayor (Xavier Suarez? been a while) down there proclaimed YbY Day and the next day the feds took him down along with most of his group’s leadership; murder, conspiracy & racketeering were among the charges.
They would buy crappy apartment buildings then send in their goons to run offthe tenants and chase the dealers, whores, and crack thieves out of the neighborhood using baseball bats and brass knucks.
Initially there was a little support from the people in the poorer neighborhoods but it dried up when it became clear the yawehists were worse neighbors.
The thieves were merely annoying but seldom dangerous, the goons positively radiated menace.
The ‘bring me the ears’ line is from the testimony of someone that reached the inner circle and turned state’s evidence, the ears were the price of admission, proof of loyalty, ruthlessness, obedience.
