Former Sen. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.) appears to be enjoying a bump in both national and state polls following his announcement tour, despite some comments that could cost him with conservative voters in the long run.
Following a tour of the early-voting states, the Thompson campaign “leaked” what looked like an internal memo from campaign pollsters McLaughlin and Associates showing the former senator making gains on front-runner and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R).

I really don't care wha elitists on the right or left determine. The liberals have made it clear they prefer Rudy since McCain tanked. The right elitists have made it clear Romney is their guy. I prefer the guy who isn't A lIBERAL for a nominee. Since Hunter isn't a viable option, Thompson is my guy. Prognosticators should have realized it isn't the delay that is damaging, it is the message. And the message from the other three has been too liberal in past. That is why the harm in Thompson's case has been negligible, as for the most part...he's stayed on conservative ground. Though for the record I consider due process for Osama to have a plane crash into the bunker he's residing in.

Exactly. It's going to be a long campaign.
I can’t see why people are surprised that Fred got a bounce once he actually joined the race. After all, look at the alternatives:
Rudy Giuliani - no even a moderate, much less a conservative. As he fades, any momentum he had from the “We need Rudy to beat Hitlery!” crowd will fade as well. Evangelicals and other conservatives who are scared out of their wits that Hillary will win (which she won’t no how, anywise) gradually will float back to their natural choice - FDT.
Mitt Romney - Slicked back pretty boy whose claims to fame are that “he’s a successful business executive” and that he was largely a failure as the Governour of Massachusetts. Great. Mitt might make a good SecTreas, but not President.
John McCain - This nut’s flatlining. He can’t even get a boost when Giuliani slips. He has no appear for any besides the 10% who already support him.
Mike Huckabee - C’mon, the guy wants a national indoor smoking ban. Can you say, “big government ‘conservative’”? His record on fiscal matters is also not very good. I simply don’t trust him not to go along with tax increases “for the children”.
Duncan Hunter - Look, the guy’s been in the House almost as long as I’ve been alive. That screams “career politician”, and not a very electable one, at that. If you can’t get past the House and at least win a statewide race, you probably don’t have any business trying to get elected across the whole country. He has a mixed record on fiscal matters, as well as the most obnoxious supporters this side of Ron Paul.
Ron Paul - LOL, don’t even get me started.
Sam Brownback, Newt Gingrich (maybe), um, who else, John Cox, and who else, um, the rest - good for dividing the consrvative vote, but little else.
Ouch! Career politician is right. After 26 years in WashDC, Hunter has become a millionare as a public servant. The Founders prefered citizen legislators. Which is exactly what Fred Thompson was. Two terms in the Senate and back to private life.
