Republican rivals Mitt Romney and Fred Thompson skirmished yesterday over a website attacking Thompson that was created by the business partner of a Romney consultant from South Carolina.
While Romney's campaign tried to distance itself from the website, a spokesman for Thompson called on Romney to fire the consultant and to issue an apology for what he called "high-tech gutter politics."
The website, PhoneyFred.org, made unflattering characterizations of the new entrant into the Republican nomination race, calling him "Playboy Fred," "Trial Lawyer Fred," and "Moron Fred," among other monikers.
It was created by Wesley Donehue, a business partner of Warren Tompkins, a former executive director of the South Carolina Republican Party who is a top consultant for Romney in the state. The site was taken down after reporters inquired about it Monday.
Kevin Madden, a spokesman for Romney, said the site was created without the knowledge of Tompkins or Romney. The campaign, he said, had no knowledge of its development - and had no authority to fire Donehue because he was not on the campaign's payroll.

Fat chance the Romulan would fire the guy...no doubt he consulted with him on the site...Sheeech, what a sleeze bag!
Romney doesn’t really represent any element of the Republican party, he serves no real purpose in political life.
He tried to become famous by making up for the shame of his anti war father’s humiliating defeat as he was laughed off the world stage.
Romney should just go back to living his life and leave us alone, he could order his followers to support the conservative candidate, that way he can try to maintain the image that he has some interest in the questions of conservatives and liberals.
He is just too light in the loafers to have any place in Republican politics.
I couldn't have said it any better myself.
Ping!
Yeah, I can definitely see Romney as a "No, no, not the face, anything but the face!" kinda guy.
If you guys insist, we sure will leave and form our own party (Unity ‘08 is a good place to start). I care about real conservative change in Washington. Have fun with Fraud Thompson who can’t lead out of a wet paper bag.
“”No, no, not the face, anything but the face!” kinda guy.”
LOL, that is much better
Isn’t he still trying to distance himself from Larry Craig?
For all of the reported growing pains written extensively about Thompson’s campaign, I’ve yet to see anything approaching the corruption & sleaze of the higher level supporters of both Rudy and Romney.
So you want Romney to join up with liberals. LOL Unity08 is that liberal organization lead by Sam Waterston of Law and Order fame. Guess you think Mitt Boy fits in nicely with those lefties.
“”If you guys insist, we sure will leave and form our own party “’
If “we” means Romney, then why not form two parties. Romney can alternate campaigning against himself, that way he can win over the cross over voters.
?
It wasn’t the consultant that did the website...it was a business partner of the consultant.
So why fire the consultant that has done nothing wrong?
Ah yes.....politics.
I am sure there are many current Romney supporters, who being mostly conservatives that have not really paid that much attention, will stay with us when Mitt joins a liberal outfit more to his tastes...
Buh bye-—
Bring Ron Paul is as a moderator
Nah, rats have standards...
“I like it, will make for some fun debate...”
Having watched so much video of Romney we know that his Romney vs Romney debates would be argued with equally convincing passion and sincerity from both sides.
Actually we could skip the debates and just show the Romney tapes from the last 13 years to cover both of his positions on each issue.
Well at least let Paul host the show...
Sad to say, but you have a point...
