Romney Blames Consultants For Thompson Parody Site
Washington Post ^ | 9-11-07 | Michael D. Shear

Posted on 09/11/2007 4:49:22 PM PDT by lesser_satan

snip

Romney spokesman Kevin Madden said the employee, Wesley Donehue, created the website phoneyfred.org without the approval of the campaign.

snip

Madden insisted Donehue is "not an employee of the Romney campaign," and his name does not appear in the financial disclosures that presidential candidates are required to make with the Federal Election Commission.

But Donehue is clearly an employee of several firms which have been paid tens of thousands of dollars by Romney.

The firm Tompkins, Thompson, Sullivan has received $37,596 from Romney's campaign, most of it for "Political strategy consulting." The web site for that firm has been taken down, but a recent page cached by Google lists him as an "associate consultant and vice president" of the firm.

snip

The firm is run by Warren Tompkins -- Romney's senior adviser in South Carolina -- and Terry Sullivan, who is on Romney's payroll as the South Carolina state director.

The company Under the Power Lines, which describes itself as an internet consulting firm, lists Donehue as a "Partner/Consultant." The phoneyfred.org website was hosted on the same server as the Under the Power Lines website.

Donehue is also listed as an "Associate" in a direct mail firm called On the Mark Direct, which has been paid $146,018 by Romney's campaign for printing.

snip

The companies Donehue works for are part of a large political operation founded by Tompkins, a longtime adviser to the late former governor, Carroll Campbell, who is known for his bare-knuckles approach to politics.

snip

In an e-mail, Tompkins said he did not know anything about the phoneyfred.org site.

"I did not know about a web site and quite frankly am very internet dysfunctional," he wrote. "Anyone who knows me would laugh at the prospect of my even being involved in such an undertaking."

Why is it that Romney is always the guy who has to apologize for this kinda crap?

Always has to, yet never does. Odd.

My question is, why does “Unity” Fred goes on the offensive on 9/11? That is pretty pathetic.

Are you kidding? Thompson’s campaign is sqealing like a stuck pig. The man couldn’t make it one week before he balled up and screamed for the teacher to make it stop.

Romney has hit sites directed against him all across the internet, pretty much all of them nastier than this one. Has he said a word? Not in the slightest. I wouldn’t expect him to.

I’m not a fan of attack sites in general. Yeah, that Romney supporters are tied to this one is disappointing. But the feigned insult on this site after people like you post your little pictures all day is just beyond even being realistic. Give it up. Let Thompson do the acting.

You’re still flailing. And Fred is laughing at Team Willard’s incompetence. The coverup is ALWAYS worse than the crime, but Willard cannot bring himself to say “this is beyond the pale, I condemn it.” Maybe tomorrow he’ll say it, maybe not.

If an anti-Fred parody site is too much to take, then they are not ready for the Clinton machine. They sound a little too thin-skinned and shrill for what's ahead.

Wonder why nobody said a peep about the Brownback anti-Fred website which is still out there? Why this selective outrage? Must be the fear of Mitt.

All Republicans should knock it off. Remember RR’s Eleventh Commandment. They can go after the RATS all they want but leave each other alone. We can sort this out without their dirty work. As a matter of fact, whichever Republican is the dirtiest to the RATS has my vote.

“They sound a little too thin-skinned and shrill for what’s ahead.”

I think they tried out “shrill and outraged” to see what Mitt’s reaction would be (since it was clear who owned the site). There is a lot of probing for reaction in politics, like when Al Gore stalked Bush during a debate, *loomed* over him while “invading his space”, because he had heard Bush would react strongly to the closeness.

“Shrill and outraged” didn’t buy them much, I don’t think.

So while not even Mitts’ campaign will say it was Trudy, you will?

Brownback does not have a prayer of the nomination. Of course now that Fred is in, neither does Mitt. Must just piss off the hard core Romney backers that Fred did in a week and with few dollars what Mitt could not in many months with many millions.

Catch Trudy.

The so-called 11th commandment was good for Reagan, just not all the time. Like 1976. And FR is not a GOP website. Its a conservative forum. If anything FReepers shouldn’t be attacking fellow conservatives. Liberals like Rooty
and moderates like Mitt have always been fair game.
