From Thompson for President Communications Director Todd Harris.
Statement on Romney's South Carolina Cover-Up
"Fred Thompson entered the race for president just days ago, talking about uniting our country around a core set of conservative beliefs. According to the Washington Post, it is now clear that while Fred Thompson is working to bring our country together, an increasingly desperate Mitt Romney and his campaign are already hard at work to divide us, practicing the lowest kind of politics.
"Today's half-baked cover-up attempt by the Romney campaign does not even pass the laugh test. The Romney campaign has paid Warren Tompkins and his various firms hundreds of thousands of dollars. Wesley Donehue works for Tompkins and is listed on Tompkins' own webpage as an associate of the firm. According to PalmettoScoop.com, Donehue 'runs the daily operations of their political consulting firm, Tompkins, Thompson and Sullivan, including direct mail efforts and a number of Web-based ventures.' [Emphasis added]
"There is no room in our party for this kind of smut. As the top executive of his own campaign, Gov. Romney should take full responsibility for this type of high-tech gutter politics and issue an immediate apology. In addition, Gov. Romney should exercise some of his much-touted executive acumen, take control of his flailing campaign, and immediately terminate anyone and everyone related to this outrage.
"This latest episode only serves to prove what many voters are already figuring out: Mitt Romney will do anything, say anything, smear any opponent and flip flop on any position in order to win. The American people in general and the Republican Party in particular deserve better than this."
I think Fred is fully in the game.
Ping!
As much as I like Fred...I hope these two don’t start flinging the mud...let’s leave that garbage to the moonbats.....
That’s gonna leave a mark...
Oh good grief, who is this screeching hag?
The feigned outrage is classic.
Since when is leading in double digits in Iowa, New Hampshire, Michigan and Nevada “flailing”? Guess the “new promotion” for Communications Director Todd Harris has gotten to his head. Don’t worry, it’s the Thompson campaign. He’ll be out of a job in a month as they reshuffle the deck once more.
I would not change a word—not a dot—of that message. Excellent.
Unlike Romney campaign workers, who resign in disgrace after impersonating cops, soliciting homo-sex in public toilets, getting sued over child abuse allegations at the school they run....

Thank goodness.
Sorry but the response you gave is typically one of a lib...divert ...deny...divert attention...
Romney should take responsibility for this fiasco. I would venture to guess had someone from Thompsons campaign put up the same kind of website, Romney supporters would be justifiably bothered.
I would have more respect for people if when things are wrong they admit, apologize , correct and move on.
What do you mean?
Even if it was directly ordered by Mitt Romney (which it wasn't), negative campaigning against one individual candidate in the primary election is not "dividing" the country. The accusation is ridiculous and a gross exaggeration.
"Today's half-baked cover-up attempt by the Romney campaign does not even pass the laugh test. The Romney campaign has paid Warren Tompkins and his various firms hundreds of thousands of dollars. Which does not prove that it was an official part of the Romney campaign. Is the Thompson campaign going to start telling lies and "half-baked" exaggerations like this right off the mark? Not good.
"There is no room in our party for this kind of smut. As the top executive of his own campaign, Gov. There was no "smut" on the web page I saw. Negative campaigning pointing out Thompson's flaws and faults is not "smut".
Further, Romney's campaign is ANYTHING but "flailing". More distortion from the Thompson campaign...
"This latest episode only serves to prove what many voters are already figuring out: Mitt Romney will do anything, say anything, smear any opponent and flip flop on any position in order to win. The American people in general and the Republican Party in particular deserve better than this."
More exaggerations and lies. I expected more from the Thompson campaign. If they want to fight dirty, then they may just get a dirty fight right back at them. This ridiculous overreaction by the Thompson campaign to a stupid little negative politicking web page in South Carolina does not bode well for the Thompson campaign or the tone of the race in general. Bad form.

Who was sued?
It WOULD HAVE been a tempest in a teapot had Tompkins been fired immediately, but he’s still there as far as I can tell.
I had hoped that Fred would build his support by going after Rudy first, Mitt only has about 15% of Republicans, and those folks are pretty hard-core for him. I see Rudy as being softer, but perhaps the strategy is to knock out Mitt first, then go after the big kahuna.
And Fred’s slogan is “Unity”? What so unifying about that statement? Looks like we got another Brownback/McCain in the campaign.
How pathetic Fred, you ain’t got no class. Presidents are supposed to take it on the chin and not go nuclear.
The FR backlash against Thompson’s campaign, for standing up to Romney’s dirty tricks like this, could make the FR support for Romney jump to as high as 6%, but maybe not.
