A former candidate for political office in Nassau County was arrested Friday and charged with criminal sexual activity.
Keith Lamar Sawyer, 44, 85064 Art Wilson Road in Yulee, was accused of seeking a sexual en-counter with an underage teenage girl. He was taken to Nassau County Jail and charged with solicitation of a minor for lewd and lascivious battery and lewd and lascivious conduct.
Sawyer, a Democrat, has unsuccessfully sought election to various county offices, including the Nassau County Ocean Highway & Port Authority in 2006 - he lost to the late Ed Gandy that November - and to the Nassau County Commis-sion in 2004 - he lost to Tom Branan that November.
According to a press release issued by the Nassau County Sheriff's Office, an informant told police Sawyer was interested in having a sexual encounter with an underage female. The informant said that "on several occasions Sawyer had stated that he would like the informant to find a 15- or 16-year-old female to have three-way sexual intercourse with him."
The informant made a telephone call Friday to Sawyer that was taped by police. "During the telephone conversation, the informant advised Mr. Sawyer that she had a 15-year-old female that agreed to engage in sexual activity with him in exchange for crack cocaine and money," according to the police report.
"The informant asked Mr. Sawyer to tell her what he had in mind for the female. Mr. Sawyer stated, 'I don't want to sound like a pervert, but whatever she wants to do.'
"Mr. Sawyer stated that he would buy the crack cocaine only if the deal was done. The informant asked Mr. Sawyer what he wanted, sex, fellatio or what. Mr. Sawyer stated that if he was providing the drugs, he wanted it all, sex and everything."
In a second recorded call later, "the informant asked Sawyer if it was a problem that the girl was only 15. Mr. Sawyer stated, 'I don't know nothing about age.'"
Sawyer was arrested when he arrived at a local hotel "where (he) believed he was going to have sex with the 15-year-old girl and the informant."
He did not have cocaine in his possession, Sheriff Tommy Seagraves said.
Sawyer posted bond and was released from Nassau County Jail.
