Unfortunately, you are correct. And some of those people sit in Congress. Despicable.
Despicable also describes the person or persons who did this.
What I cannot comprehend is that so few have learned from the 30 years since.
I can ascribe it to fear in the sixties, arrogance and momentum in the seventies...but today?

With Guard and Reserves fighting & reenlisting?
For a long time I believed that triumphant flower children simply could not admit they'd been wrong.
Now I wonder if the Iron Curtain didn't come down a bit to easily for people to remember that a real conflict had existed.
I wonder if people don't simply believe that everything will work out OK if we only stretch it out a bit longer without really doing anything.
