>If you don’t like Fred after looking at his record then fine...but please....look at his record!<

I have examined his record, and I do not find him to be presidential material.

The last paragraph of the article:

The rationale for Thompson’s run has been refreshingly phony: It’s all about his looks, his voice, his personality. His backers have confused all of that with leadership, and Thompson, like the worst actor, is starting to believe his reviews. That’s a mistake. The point of Fred Thompson is that he was never serious.

I, along with many Freepers, was excited at the prospect of a Thompson candidacy. That was very early in the process, but as time went on I just never got the impression that Fred WANTED the Presidency.

His seemingly lack of enthusiasm has not impressed me. I am watching him over the next couple of weeks to see if my impression changes, but so far I agree with much of what is written. If he thinks he is going to get he nod with doom and gloom, I think he may be mistaken.

I know I will get flamed for this post, but if anyone can honestly tell me that the man on Jay Lenos couch last week was inspiring and exciting, I will be surprised. Please, look at it objectively, and not from the rah rah viewpoint, the man was talked into this by grass root supporters, and he now has to prove that he has the enthusiasm to sustain the support.

FDT fact of the day: while serving in the Senate, 'future president' Thompson passed three bills - mostly post office naming stuff. During this same time, McCain passed 17 pieces of legislature. The difference is leadership (even though McCain is an asshat I dislike and don't care for - he is a leader).

That was then and this is now.

Fred is the only top tier candidate who is leading a no nonsense, across the board conservative campaign.

Rudy's positions in this campaign on abortion, illegal immigration and gun control are not leadership. Those positions are inside the beltway, follow the establishment, liberal.

I could say similar things about McCain's lack of leadership in this campaign. His positions on the Amnesty Bill and Gitmo, follow the liberal, inside the beltway crowd.

Mitt seems to be a later convert to conservatism than Fred.

It is Fred now, today, in the present, during this election cycle who is showing the leadership about what is best for this country.

Fred Thompson is a free-trade extremist, more than any other candidate possibly.

If you want a pro-American candidate, you have two choices: Hunter and Huckabee; and Hunter isn’t viable at this point, so I recommend Huckabee.

>>>You have not said anything that indicates that Fred is significantly less of a conservative than the other candidates. <<<

Hello??? Opposition to Federal Marriage Amendment? Votes for Amnesty? Opposition to IDs to recognize legal immigrants? Opposition to raising fines on employers who do hire illegals?

OPPOSITON TO THE BORDERWALL? Even Sam Brownback and John McCain support that. Fred Thompson joins Mike Huckabee and Rudy Giuliani as the only parties in this race opposed to the wall.

Thompson is at best the 4th or 5th best candidate on the border. At best. honestly, I’d group him right along with Brownback and Huckabee on the issue.

“Because we allowed ourselves to wait until we woke up one day and found 12 million illegals here, there’s no easy solution. And I think that you have to realize that you’re either going to drive 12 million people underground permanently, which is not a good solution. You’re going to get them all together and get them out of the country, which is not going to happen. Or you’re going to have to, in some way, work out a deal where they can have some aspirations of citizenship, but not make it so easy that it’s unfair to the people waiting in line and abiding by the law.”

—Fred Thompson, Amnesty by almost any definition used on this site.

Reason Magazine represents a big constituency in the Republican Primary, right up there with Salon, Slate and Huffington Post. LOL I would be concerned if they had anything good to say about Fred. Their contempt IMHO shoould be wornas a badge of honor, and it is a clear indication that they fear Fred Thompson.

LOL, fair enough.

And if I was trying to be a public pundit, I would expect nothing less from you.

Cherchez les special interests. This is what separates the wheat from the chaff. There are many “conservatives” who will vote the right way on many issues whether from conviction or political self interest, but the real test for Republicans is their relationship to big business. This Achilles heel has been exposed by the illegal immigration issue. Many “conservatives” are big business Republicans who really showed their true colors when the cheap labor interest asked them to vote for the amnesty bill.
