Here is a funny but true thing that happened in my tribe a few years ago. (nothing to do with this thread but interesting): A fairly famous artist and one of the few remaining Redwood dugout canoe makers in my tribe was being interviewed and was asked why he used chainsaws and modern tools to build a traditional redwood canoe. His answer was, when the buyers pull up in their covered wagons to buy them from me, I will go back to the traditional tools to make them. LOL

Redwood in N. California and Cedar farther to the north. Both soft woods and workable. If I remember correctly, tillacum means friend...right? My name Fish Hawk is my Indian name. In our language it is Tseik w Tsek.

Just incredible....

I think that Dave Barry did an article on this event, but you have to see the smashed cars to believe it.

Wow.

That brings to mind. Pt Barrow Eskimos were in the process of processing a whale. Everyone, on tv, ate a bit of the meat and some of the blubber. I’ve tased the blubber and it isn’t bad, if you have an imagination, as I do, it does taste a bit like almonds. It’s like seaweed, it grows as one chews. Anyway, the reporters were all in a dither with the oldsters eating the raw meat, which to them is a treat, some tasting the fat, as I did and one of the reporters asked a younger woman, what else do you do with whale meat. Her answer, “it’s great with beef and macaron, except we use whale meat.” I thought that was precous. Times change and so do we humans. Some like to remember the “olden days”, which weren’t bad, cause they didn’t know any different, some like to live in the present, so let’s let them do it. As for the whaling.........??????????? Maybe one day it too will diappear, like so many of the legends, art, old recipes, etc, but it will be a memory for the “oldsters” of that era, of glory, not quite attained.

LMAO!

A few years ago there was a case where two juvenile tribe members (I don't remember which tribe) who had committed some truly horrific crimes were "exiled" to a remote island per Tribal sentencing, and there were numerous news reports of them being visited (with boxes of food and goodies) by various relatives throughout their "incarceration".  It was obvious to all that it was a joke and was essentially a vacation for the juveniles.  I think that many people would appreciate a demonstration of justice that is commonly recognized as truly being justice from a Tribal council....it would be great PR in such a high-profile case as this.

I was never given a name. Yes, tillicum means “friend” or “people”. When I was younger we’d address one another with “Klah-hi-ya tillicum” “Hello Friend”. Those days are gone. My aunt and father were the last of the chinook speakers. They are gone now, and we were never taught the traders talk nor my mothers language.

A few years ago, I heard a story from a VERY RELIABLE source.

Seems some of the Indians in Eastern Washington got upset about either the number of Elk tags that were given out that year, or the permitting process, or something.

A couple regular guy type hunters had spotted and were screening a fair size elk herd, and the Indians knew about.
The Indians loaded their guns and just flat out slaughtered the herd. Bucks, doe, spikes, everything.

I used to fish the Puyallup river quite a bit for salmon. Before the Indian nets go in, the river is positively BOILING with fish! Huge dorsal fins of kings leaving wakes in the water!

Then the nets go in an literally, a day later, the river is like glass.

I was fishing there one day and a native in a boat holds up about a 12 pound king and offers it to me for 5 bux. I declined. At that time, it was not unusual for me to spend 2-3 hundred bucks a year to the state and the gear folks trying to catch a fish like that on my pole. But no more.

The state made a HUGE mistake. They should have given the Indians the casino ON CONDITION that they give up the fish.

I may get my license and try to catch a few pinks this year, but I doubt it. I remember years back, on November 30, last day of the season, I got a beaut of a silver in the Green river, about 7 pounds, river was muddy as hell, and it took a small green spinner I was using! And even though it was late, that fish was chrome bright, my better half was amazed I got one that nice that late.

WOW....I hadn't heard about that particular event, but that doesn't mean anything because the local media may not have been interested in reporting it.

It sounds almost like a return to the 'old days'

I"m very sorry to hear that....such a shame that your favorite pastime has been made so unpalatable.  I hope that one day you might find a site where you can still enjoy yourself fishing.

And even though it was late, that fish was chrome bright, my better half was amazed I got one that nice that late.

It sounds like you had a really nice time, and I do hope that you will still be able to pursue your fishing hobby.  Good luck to you  :-)
