Duquesne: Baldonado arrests won't hurt program, tarnish teammates

PITTSBURGH - Duquesne coach Ron Everhart is "embarrassed, disappointed and angry" about the drug-related arrests of former junior college star Stuard Baldonado, a promising recruit who drew national sympathy a year ago after being shot but now has an uncertain basketball future.

But Everhart and athletic director Greg Amodio said Thursday they are determined to prevent Baldonado's case from tarnishing his teammates and the school or derailing a promising program that appears to be on the brink of winning for the first time in 14 years.

"I know from a basketball perspective it's not going to affect our program in any way, shape or form," Everhart said. "Our team understands everyone is held to a standard and guys have to act and represent themselves and the institution in a certain way."

Baldonado, one of five players shot on campus a year ago this month, was arrested Friday and charged with criminal conspiracy involving the manufacture, delivery or possession of a controlled substance. He was indefinitely suspended from the university and the basketball team Wednesday.

A few hours later on Wednesday night, Pittsburgh police said they spotted Baldonado smoking by himself on a street corner near the Duquesne campus. After being questioned, Baldonado was told he would be mailed a summons charging him with misdemeanor possession of marijuana, officer David Honick said Thursday.

I wonder what the punishment of a US citizen committing similar crimes, including domestic violence, in Colombia would be especially with an excuse of "stressed out" thrown into the mix.

It amazes me that undesirable aliens such as Mr. Baldonaldo aren’t expelled from the country pronto.

Even if he is “stressed out” or has some other excuse , he’s still a burden and potential burden on the country and the health system if not the criminal.
