There is no more important front in the global conflict best described as the "War for the Free World" than the struggle to determine the nature and future course of Islam.
If Islamists seeking to impose their intolerant, repressive strain of the faith — more a totalitarian political ideology (Islamofascism) than a religion — on the rest of us (Muslim and non-Muslim alike) are able to prevail, we are condemned to the clash of civilizations forecast by Osama bin Laden.
If, on the other hand, Muslims who reject that ideology — the anti-Islamists — succeed in offering their co-religionists an alternative that is peaceable and allows full assimilation into freedom-loving societies like that of the United States, the prospects are very different. We then have allies who can help us defeat our mutual foes, the Islamofascists — allies who may succeed in enlisting to our common cause the hundreds of millions of Muslims who want no more than the rest of us to live under a Taliban-style religious code the Islamists call Shariah.
Readers of this column may recall that the epochal contest between the Islamofascists and the anti-Islamists is the subject of a documentary movie, "Islam vs. Islamists: Voices from the Muslim Center," of which I was one of three co-executive producers. It describes the challenges facing courageous opponents of totalitarianism perpetrated in the name of the Muslim faith in Western Europe, Canada and the United States. The saga of this film illustrates how the West is generally failing to understand the stakes, let alone the vital role it must play, in this momentous struggle.

Gaffney touches on a good point here. Those who claim our anitpathy toward islam demonstrates an unacceptable "intolerance" of another religion are falling for sleight-of-hand semantics. Muslime will be the first to admit that their "religion" encompasses much more than just the spiritual realm, that there is in fact no separation of Mosque and State. The autocratic regimes of Khomeini and Saddam demonstrate the oppressive nature of islam as a political ideology. Our rejection of its tenets is not based upon its religious dimension at all, but rather upon its tyrannical methods of administering public policy.
We didn't oppose Hitler because of his religious ideology, but because he was a murdering tyrant. Similarly, we oppose the islamic savages because they embrace a murderous, primitive polity, albeit one with ecclesiastical roots.
The author of this piece fails to understand that a "centrist" muslim is a man who is merely one or two steps away from lopping off your head because you're an 'infidel', whereas a 'radical' muslim is already swinging the scimitar. I don't like either prospect. Trying to turn 'radical' muslims into 'centrist' muslims is akin to researchers trying to turn leprosy into cancer, with the belief that cancer is more treatable. Common sense seems to be nearly dead today. Islam is an evil, not merley a political problem. The same goes for communist China, land of forced abortions and murdering prisoners for the purpose of harvesting their organs. You can't dance with the devil without paying the price of admission. Maybe it's time to stop the dance with middle east oil and cheasy chicom products? Or maybe it isn't? Only time will tell if there is enough faith left in the West to give us the strength to stop the deadly dance. But one thing I know, you can't keep strengthening your enemies and expect to survive for long.

The author is Frank Gaffney. He’s not as ignorant or naive as you seem to think he is.
Well, he's comfortable with "centrist" muslims, and to me that means he's still missing the big picture. Radical islam is nothing more than 'centrist' Islam with a slightly more literal interpretation of the koran. It is the wellspring of terrorism. When you have 1.2 billion people falling on their faces five times a day because the koran commands it, and you have 1.2 billion people believing that 'infidels' are condemned to rot in Hell for all eternity because of their refusal to accept Mohammed's cult, and you have 1.2 billion people who believe that Jews are 'sons of monkies and pigs', you have the recipe for perpetual hatred, terrorism and murder. 'Centrist' Islam is just as dangerous to humanity as is radical islam, because Islam itself is a radical theology that keeps people embedded in tribalism, medievalism and barbarism.
