I agree.

When we moved weapons in Charleston you could tell which ones were nukes and which ones were conventional. All you had to do was watch the Marines.

Storing nukes in Louisiana? That’s just silly considering all the natural distasters that seem to hit that state. ND sounds like a much more logical place to keep them.

No, it’s now ACC (Air Combat Command). Of course, the motto still applies: “To err is human, to forgive is not SAC policy”...look for some Art 15s at the minimum.

Perhaps I am wrong, but during the cold war S.A.C. (I think that is what it was called) did this on a routine basis during their DEFCON drills.

"Airborne Alert".

Regular practice until Jan 17, 1966.

the Military Times said, quoting three officers who spoke on condition they remain anonymous because they were not authorized to discuss the incident

I don't believe anything I read that comes from anonymous sources, especially military, who can really get in trouble for leaking. Military Times, yahoo, AP ....all garbage.

Bullshit alert! :-)

Somebody stumbled onto something they shouldn't have and this is the story that we get as a result.

[I don’t think so. Planes fly ‘great circle’ routes and Iran is essentially ‘over the pole’ from ND.]

Actually, Iran is 6400 miles from ND and 7200 from LA.

“This is a non-story.”

Tell it to the commander who was relieved.

Unless this is furthering the conspiratorial plot to nuke Iran.

Does it matter how far Iran is from either of the two locales? With aerial refuling and some inflight meals, the “ordinance disposal” mission would be a snap.

I simply DO NOT believe that 3 Officers would reveal nuclear info such as this without orders and a script.

You have a good point: there are few things held more securely in this country than info on nukes. It is a huge stretch to think these guys did this on a whim.

Barksdale AFB is nowhere near the coast. It's quite safe, I assure you. It's also a large bomber base, so anything a B-52 can carry might well be shipped there for storage pending use.

In case you don't recall, Barksdale is the base to which Air Force One carried President Bush on 9/11.

There’s a lot wrong with this “story”, if you can call a few sentences a story. Three personel named “anonymous” rushed to leak, huh? What, now there’s a que every time there’s a change to make the military, and by default the president, look bad? And highly trained men can’t tell teh difference between old missiles and new, high tech ones?

This is a media fake to keep Norman Hsu (who skipped his bail hearing today) off the front page.

“Three personel named “anonymous” rushed to leak...”

The event occurred on 30 Aug. Today is 5 Sept. Information coming out in 6 days is not “rushed.”

Tell it to the commander who was relieved.

Indeed. Add to that the ground crews (crew chiefs, munitions handlers and loaders, to name a few) who are now decertified. Essentially, the entire wing is out on the ropes.

Another source says the Air Force will not fly fighter/bomber missions on the 14th. They'll be on the ground reviewing procedures.

Gawd, I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of the Wing's next inspection.

Yes. This is very much a story.

Tell it to the commander who was relieved.

Only one? Which one...the flying squadron, the munitions squadron, the ops group, the mx group....if true, all should be gone...along with OPSOs, supers, crews...

I am not knowledgeable about such things, but I agree it is hard to conceive of a “mistake” like that. Surely there is no item as heavily regulated and closely monitored as a live nuclear warhead. I doubt if one could leave any location without a blizzard of redundant paperwork and commanding officer checks in triplicate. One doesn’t just “oops” with a nuke.
