TOKYO : A strong typhoon was churning in the Pacific towards Japan on Wednesday and may hit the Tokyo area later in the week, the weather agency said.

Typhoon Fitow, packing winds of up to 108 kilometres (67 miles) an hour near its centre, was in the Pacific hundreds of kilometres south of Tokyo Wednesday morning and was forecast to reach Tokyo or its vicinity by early Friday.

Solly, Char-rey, but “packing winds of up to 67 miles an hour, Typhoon Fitow ain’t nothin’ but a little shower. And what’s with the proles’ hurricane fascination, anyways? Live near the ocean, expect some sideways, salty rain. Live in the mountains, expect to wreck a few cars, skidding on ice. Why the hurricane headlines? Why the hysteria?

I don’t know where that figure in the article came from (I’ve seen several different numbers), but I included the tracking map (which is updated automatically). The map has the wind speed ranges, color-coded.

No hysteria. Just another weather-related news story. Besides, the eye of this one will pass very near to or directly overhead of me. Rain is coming and going in bands today; nothing exciting yet.

We’ve had some big winds here in Minneapolis but they haven’t been sustained like your article indicates. Keep me posted!

Wind at 50 meters per second? I don’t know what that translates to. Is it time to batten down the hatches?
