Sen. Craig Reconsiders Choice to Resign

BOISE, Idaho - Sen. Larry Craig is reconsidering his decision to resign after his arrest in a Minnesota airport sex sting and may still fight for his Senate seat, his spokesman said Tuesday evening. "It's not such a foregone conclusion anymore, that the only thing he could do was resign," said Sidney Smith, Craig's spokesman in Idaho's capital.

"We're still preparing as if Senator Craig will resign Sept. 30, but the outcome of the legal case in Minnesota and the ethics investigation will have an impact on whether we're able to stay in the fight - and stay in the Senate."

Craig, a Republican who has represented Idaho in Congress for 27 years, announced Saturday that he intends to resign from the Senate on Sept. 30. But since then, he's hired a prominent lawyer to investigate the possibility of reversing his plea, his spokesman said.

Craig was a no-show Tuesday as Congress reconvened after a summer break and it wasn't clear whether he'll return at all since deciding to resign over his guilty plea in a sex sting this summer at the Minneapolis airport.

Another spokesman, Dan Whiting in Washington, said Tuesday that Craig was expected to spend the week in Idaho as the Senate votes on spending bills for veterans and other programs. Whiting did not rule out Craig's returning to Washington before the end of the month.

A telephone call Craig received last week from Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., urging him to consider fighting for his seat is affecting Craig's decision to reconsider his resignation, Smith said.

...he's hired a prominent lawyer....

27 years... Get out! Go away! I despise these putrid sleazy professional politicians and the morons that keep voting them back in.

If voters are so freakin stupid as to keep sending the same jerks back to DC then I'm all for term limits AND a voter IQ test.

Specter suggested that if his little friend, Craig, can clear his record with the courts then all will be forgiven.

Specter, of course, is totally nuts.

Or, maybe he's been dunkining his head in the toilet bowl too many times himself.

Neither of these two Senators are all that well-wrapped when you get right down to it.

I think he still has a lot of support in Idaho. It would appear that he is finally getting some decent legal advice.
You go Larry (and I mean go to court, not go as in resign from the Senate)!

All they have on him is a couple of toe taps and hand movements - - no dialogue, nothing. Zip, nada, zilch.

He was entrapped, and possibly harrassed and hounded into the guilty plea (and probably told in the process ‘just do this and it will all go away’) so he mailed in the signed plea... Duh! Too bad he did not lawyer up on the spot.

He is going to be cleared in the court soon and should not knuckle under and/or resign under pressure in September... Later maybe? But not now.

Even as I write this from his congressional district only 5% of the US population knows the name William Jefferson.

On the other hand, 95% of the US population knows Larry Craig and that his is a closet Queer who trolls for men and or boys in public restrooms.

I hope his trial in MN is broadcast on Court TV and that his Senate Impeachment hearing is broadcast on on news networks.

This man is a disgrace to Idaho, the GOP, America and even most queers who would never dream of cruising for sex in an airport bathroom.

What was bad is the entire country was sickened by the homosexual nature of trying to get a man in the next stall to have sex of some sort. As Mitt Romney says “It was disgusting”.

Idaho voters should know Larry Craig's word is NOT his bond.

I cheered when Specter said this on Fox News Sunday. The Republicans have already lost a lot of irreplaceable talent by giving into lynch mobs. It is just sickening to watch the drive bys demonize and demolish men in what they call the court of public op;inion. None of the safeguards in the Bill of Rights apply.

These things also bring out the least attractive, most judgmental, and intolerant among us to yell, "crucify him. Crucify him." That is very hard to take. They feel so righteous. They don't even realize they are being played for suckers by the left. Both Christian charity and constitutional guarantees of due process should make us more judicious.

If some Republicans now realize that they have to come up with an effective strategy for fighting back, that is good. Too bad Newt and Tom de Lay have to watch from the sidelines.

He did the right thing. But other people have swayed him. Too bad for him. The torture has just begun.

And we should blame Rush Limbaugh. I listened to his show today and he was defending Craig and saying how he should fight this. I felt like I was listening to Anderson Cooper! Rush really let me down today. I had to change the channel.

Like I said on another thread, it's too late now. The Governor has already selected his replacement. Trying to reverse everything would simply put everyone in awkward position (forgive the pun). Big time. It would keep the whole mess on the front page.

Come to think of it, maybe Hillary's donors are paying him to "reconsider".
