La Raza warns it might pull out of 2009 convention in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The nation's largest Hispanic civil rights organization is warning it may move its 2009 convention from Kansas City because of a controversial city park board member. The National Council of La Raza is already looking at other cities after the appointment of Frances Semler, an anti-illegal immigration activist, said Janet Murguia, La Raza's president.

City Councilmembers have also heard concerns from members of the NAACP, which is expected to hold its 2010 convention in Kansas City. The city hasn't heard directly from officials of the national organization. Losing two national conventions could hurt the city's image and cost the local economy about $15 million, city officials said.

"Hopefully we can work it out," said City Councilwoman Melba Curls.

Mayor Mark Funkhouser appointed Semler to the Parks and Recreation Board of Commissioners in June causing a stir in the local Hispanic community. Semler is a member of the Minutemen Civil Defense Corps and has taken a strong stance against illegal immigration and suggested a moratorium on legal immigration.

Murguia told Funkhouser in a telephone conversation last week that the conference will be held elsewhere if Semler doesn't step down.

"It is very troubling that we would be in a position to reconsider but in fact we are," Murguoa said during a trip to Kansas City.

To make the move, La Raza would have to pay the city as much as $70,000 for failing to meet its hotel-room guarantee, she said.

Murguia said she has been in discussions with leaders from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, who she says have the same concerns. The six-day NAACP convention would bring more than 10,000 people with an expected economic impact of $9 million.

Does this mean they will soon depart for Mexico.

This is confusing to me as well. Surely the majority of blacks are not in favor of illegal immigration.

Your confusion seems well placed. Then again, the majority of blacks don't run the NAACP, and it might be argued that blacks don't run it at all. It was founded by white Lefties and a few figurehead blacks. It has traditionally been supported mostly by whites, especially liberal Jews, and perhaps still is.

The question, as with the unions, is not what is in the interest of the rank-and-file, but what helps the brass advance their careers and portfolios.

Of course in an ideal world, Democrats would pull out of the convention if a racist organization like “La Raza” were participating.

The cleanup after these conventions will cost more than $15 mil., negating any benefit.
Kansas City would be the winner if they cancel.

Cant understand why the NAACP would side with La Raza...The Race....The Mex Klux Klan. Blacks have been more adversly affected by illegal alienism than whites, per capita. I guess the NAACP is pooh poohing the Newark murders

How much you wanna bet La Raza and the NAACP never had any intention to have conventions in Kansas City.

These people are a joke. If appointing one Park Commissioner is all it takes to keep them from coming to my town, I have to write my City Councilmen with some suggested appointments.

The city probably owns the convention center (?)

Often is government owned building.

Very interesting that the NAACP is also considering pulling their convention. Hope it does. It will just undermine the NAACP’s credibility further . . .

Well, she says they are, anyway, but I noticed there is no quote or citation from the NAACP confirming this.

La Raza can pull out of the United States, as far as I’m concerned. Don’t let the door hit you in the butt.

“Surely the majority of blacks are not in favor of illegal immigration.”

That doesn’t stop their self-interested “leaders” from supporting illegal immigration. White politicians are in favor of it, despite the fact that the majority of white Americans don’t favor it. Our country’s supposed political leadership becomes more and more elitist, and isolated from the people whose interests it pretends to represent.

Great info! Too bad this bill will pass. The White House and Democrats want OPEN BORDERS and La Raza will help them get that.

The conservative black commentator Jesse Peterson is currently promoting a book, or something where he mentions “the phoney alliance between blacks and Hispanics being promoted by black leaders.”

Many blacks aren’t pleased to have been supplanted as the nation’s largest minority, and I don’t blame them since illegal immigration and past amnesties played a big part. More and more blacks are mentioning the downward pressure on wages caused by illegals. And, there is quite a bit of violence between black and Hispanic gangs in large cities and in prisons. Petersen might be right that this supposed alliance is just a figment of the ‘leaders’ imagination.

More blacks are beginning to take notice of these realities. Don’t know what the majority think as of now.
