Romney jokes about Thompson delays
Yahoo News ^ | 9/3/07 | PHILIP ELLIOTT

Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney on Monday said he would welcome Republican rival Fred Thompson to the race, but also took some jabs at Thompson's long delay in formally announcing his candidacy.

Thompson, the "Law & Order" television actor and former senator from Tennessee, is expected to officially enter the race this week. Instead of attending a Wednesday night debate in Durham, N.H., Thompson will be in Los Angeles to appear on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno."

"I think it will boost the ratings for Jay Leno's show, but I'd rather be doing well in New Hampshire," said Romney, who is leading in most polls in this early voting state.

Thompson's candidacy has been a shadow on the GOP contest. He has equivocated about getting into the race, while his campaign organization has been in flux. His entry comes remarkably late in a campaign cycle that began days after the 2006 midterm elections.

"Well, I guess the only comment I'd make to Fred Thompson would be: Why the hurry? Why not take a little longer to think this over?" Romney jokingly told reporters. "From my standpoint, if he wants to wait until January or February, that would be ideal."

That's when the primaries unfold in rapid succession.

Romney spent Monday opening his fall campaign, marching in a Labor Day parade in Milford and attending retails stops elsewhere. He said voters would note who is there — and who is not.

"I think people will notice there have been a bunch of guys who have been working real hard to get to know voters across the country," Romney said.

As for Thompson's entry, Romney quipped: "I think he'll have some fun. We're going to presumably have some debates with him. We'll have had five without him."

Lets not forget, we're picking the leader of the free world, not the best debater. In that regard, Fred Thompson wins hands down

Sure, he's a good leader...for a guy who's got zero leadership experience.

Whatever the reason, the grade-school level name-calling does nobody any good. The ones doing it discredit themselves and add absolutely nothing to the discussion.

It really creates a bitter and childish atmosphere. Someone above was referring to candidates as 'turds' - how low-class can you get? It's not just low-class, it's low-class and juvenile. FR deserves better.

Every time I see a pro-Precious thread, that IS offensive.

If it’s Rudy McRomney, flush it down.

Who is going to be running an ad on FNC during the NH debate? IMHO betya FRED gets equal or more positive attention by being on Jay and running a duringn detates instead of getting 15 seconds to answer questions.

“It is difficult to sort through the venom and hyperbole of your posts to learn anything reliable. For me, it seems that for anyone to be governor of MA and accomplish anything positive and conservative is a miracle. You seem to brush aside too much of the positive just to post your subjective criticisms.”

Of course, if he actually presented a fact-based, reasoned explanation of the Romney record ... he wouldn’t be bashing Romney, because the Romney record is both fiscally conservative and socially more conservative than the bashers want to admit.

“And Romney, as governor, acted on these convictions. He vetoed an embryonic cloning bill; he vetoed a bill that would allow the “morning after pill” to be acquired without a prescription on the grounds that it is an abortifacient; he vetoed legislation which would have redefined Massachusetts longstanding definition of the beginning of human life from fertilization to implantation; and he fought to promote abstinence education in the classroom. One should not underestimate the tremendous political price that Governor Romney paid in Massachusetts for these acts. Both conviction and courage are necessary for effective pro-life leadership, and Romney, in office, displayed both.

These actions as governor have lead leaders of the most important social conservative groups in Massachusetts, including Massachusetts Citizens for Life, Massachusetts Family Institute, and the Knights of Columbus, to observe that, while previous comments by Romney “are, taken by themselves, obviously worrisome to social conservatives including ourselves, they do not dovetail with the actions of Governor Romney from 2003 until now — and those actions positively and demonstrably impacted the social climate of Massachusetts.” They conclude that Romney “demonstrat[ed] [his] solid social conservative credentials by undertaking” these actions, and has therefore “proven that he shares our values, as well as our determination to protect them.”:”

Voters like Senators, governors, or former VPs.

Yes, and there's a good reason for that. I'll leave it as an exercise for you to figure out why.

If Hunter were a Senator instead

Ah, but there in lies the problem: he's a mere congressman.

You’ll never find a more ardent Second Amendment supporter than I and I am proud to support Mitt Romney.

Let me give you a little clue. In order to get elected, Romney needs to appeal to a broad base.

Sheeeeesh already.

“Maybe you misunderstand. He accomplished nothing positive as Governor. He was grossly incompetent as a Republican “leader.” Unless you consider furthering the liberal agenda and expanding the Democrat majorities to be a positive ?”

I understand perfectly. It is you who is “stuck on hyperbole.” It is your excessive rhetoric that undermines the conservative cause, not Mitt’s accomplishments. And just so you don’t misunderstand, I am not voting for Mitt. I think he would do a good job, but there are too many vicious and dumb people out there to give him a chance.

I have. Go look it up. No one can refute his shameful record and the disaster of what he left behind, period. Where are all the Republican officeholders he helped to elect as Governor ? Show me them. Start with Congress. I'll be waiting.

“he’s good looking, has charisma, and is rich. So he must be a good leader”

The leadership credentials have nothing to do with his looks or his money (but at least he earned it and didnt marry it like Kerry) ... it is noted in post #113, itesm such as:

In his three years at the helm in Salt Lake, Romney erased a $379 million operating deficit, organized 23,000 volunteers, galvanized community spirit and oversaw an unprecedented security mobilization just months after the September 11th attacks, leading to one of the most successful Olympics in our country’s history.

Prior to his Olympic service, Mitt Romney enjoyed a successful career helping businesses grow and improve their operations. From 1978 to 1984, Mr. Romney was a Vice President at Bain & Company, Inc., a leading management consulting firm. In 1984, Romney founded Bain Capital, one of the nation’s most successful venture capital and investment companies. Bain Capital helped guide hundreds of companies on a successful course, including Staples, Bright Horizons Family Solutions, Domino’s Pizza, Sealy, Brookstone, and The Sports Authority. He was asked to return to Bain & Company as CEO several years later in order to lead a financial restructuring of the organization. Today, Bain & Company employs more than 2,000 people in 25 offices worldwide.

... comparing that to John Edwards’ ambulance-chasing is a biiig stretch indeed.

You’re talking to someone who used to support him, pal. Right up through to his Governorship. Some of us know his true record, and that’s why we’re warning those who don’t know precisely what he did. The rest just live in denial. In fact, the more you get to know him, the less desireable he becomes. What’s really disgusting is that some people on FR are putting their religious sect ahead of doing RIGHT. They’re coming dangerously close to acting like cultists.

“. . . there are too many vicious and dumb people out there” to give Romney a chance.

Nope. There are more of us (people with open minds and hearts). Read on:

“Whatever one thinks about Romney’s conversion, and I believe it is sincere, the fact remains that Romney opposes public funds for embryo-destructive research that McCain and Giuliani support. Romney has fought for a federal marriage amendment and McCain and Giuliani oppose one. There is the simple question of whether social conservatives want someone who is currently on their side or someone who currently opposes them.

“— James Bopp Jr. is a lawyer who focuses on nonprofit corporate and tax law, on campaign finance and election law, and on life issues. He most recently joined the Romney Presidential campaign as a special adviser on life issues, an unpaid position.”
