Beware: enemy attacks in cyberspace (China: People's Liberation Army)
Financial Times ^ | 9/3/07 | Demetri Sevastopulo

Lieutenant General Robert Elder, senior Air Force officer for cyberspace issues, recently joked that North Korea “must only have one laptop” to make the more serious point that every potential adversary – except Pyongyang – routinely scans US computer networks.

North Korea may be impotent in cyberspace, but its neighbour is not. The Chinese military sent a shiver down the Pentagon’s spine in June by successfully hacking into an unclassified network used by the top policy advisers to Robert Gates, the defence secretary.

While the People’s Liberation Army has been probing Pentagon networks hundreds of times a day for the past few years, the US is more alarmed at the growing frequency and sophistication of the attacks.

The Pentagon spent several months deflecting the recent onslaught before the PLA penetrated its system, which was shut down for more than a week for diagnosis.

While officials are concerned that it downloaded information, they are more concerned about the strategic ramifications.

“Technology - Reuters
Microsoft Offers Source Code to China
Fri Feb 28, 8:24 AM ET

Add Technology - Reuters to My Yahoo!

“By Juliana Liu

“BEIJING (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp founder and chairman Bill Gates (news - web sites) said on Friday the software giant had signed a deal to give the Chinese government access to its source code, which lies at the heart of its Windows operating system.

“The world’s largest software firm, fighting competition from the free “open-source” Linux (news - web sites) platform, will distribute its jealously-guarded technology to China under an initiative to promote software security and to woo the world’s most populous country.”

There is a reaction from Alan Cox, one of the head programmers behind Linux:

“If they have to release the source code to governments what does it say to the companies they won’t release it to?” It’s also interesting to note that in some countries, where perhaps the relationship between governments, business and the people are not so good that by giving it only to government it is giving government the power to use all security holes in Windows so they may have done harm to business and individuals.”

Microsoft's Bill Gates gave the Chinese the code.

However, as you may know, Bill Gates is on the Board of the Clinton Foundation.

Laura Bush is also affiliated with the Clinton Foundation: education.

I’m definitely not ‘programmer’ saavy, and was wondering if it is possible to put multiple levels of disinformation in a network such that hackers have a hard time knowing if what they obtained access to is valuable or not.

Little known to a lot of people is when the EP-3 aircraft was bumped and forced to land on Hainan Island PRC in 2001, there was a hacking war between the US and the PRC.
Totally unsanctioned, of course, about 15,000 PRC websites were hacked, homepages changed, messages sent and general mayhem in the PRC internet.

They want to go against some of the whiz-kids we have, I'm all for it, and ready to help.
